Hi, I have used Nutro for my stomach sensitive GSD for 3 years, I recently switched to Royal Canin GSD formula for all my shepherds. I found they have done well on it, but only as convenience to me, so that I do not have to feed 3 different foods. I also have a lab who is on the Nutro high protein formula. I also have the opinion that asking which foods people feed their dogs is a little like opening a can of worms. Everyone is going to think that the food they feed is the best. My opinion is that whatever works for your dog is the best food. It's individualized just like our diets are. As long as its a good quality food that has all the necessary nutrients, and your dog has a healthy, shiny coat and is keeping good weight, I belive that the food is just fine. Hopefully I have provided some information. I am not saying you should feed what I feed at all, I have found that my foods work for my dogs, not necessarily anyone elses. I also want to say that pet stores usually feed Purina,Pedigree, or Iams because it is a lower cost to them than Nutro or the other higher quality foods such as Royal Canin, Pro Plan, Eukanuba, Science Diet, and many others. Breeders are the ones who are feeding the higher quality foods. Remember the only one who can decide what is best for your dog is you. See how he responds to the foods over a 3 month trial period. If it doesnt work, slowly switch and see if a different food is better. Its all up to you and your dog! Elizabeth Arellano earellano@gmail.com

I agree, very good thread...Abady is very good, but like Charlie said "a pain". I prefer Royal Canin unless there is a sensitivity to soy...also, remember not to over feed... We sometimes interfere with the diet by giving too many bad things along with the food, some human foods are not easily digestable by our dogs and shouldn't be mixed with the kibble.

If you can get Abady, I don't think you can do better -I've been using it over 20 years, (since before a lot of people knew about it), I believe it as contributed to the fact that we have 13-14 year old dogs, and have had for some time. I would worry about ethoxiquin (sp?) along with the soy issues and everything else - I know lots of dogs that were fed foods preserved with ethox. and they ceased to get pregnant - when taken off those foods, they "took" again. Yup, everybody's food is the best, just like everybody's dog is better than everybody elses (because it's theirs, silly) and that's the way it should be. Just make sure your chicken by-products are not beaks and feet - and that they didn't use chickens that were so diseased it wasn't good enough for anything else -- so they put it in your dog food. And if you have breeding animals -- don't get crazy with the CARBS. As a rule - we dislike any ingredient that FERMENT -- and any preservatives that would allow a dog food to be shelf-stable for 12 months !! Who the heck wants to feed their dog something that's been sitting in a warehouse in Kansas for a YEAR ?? Not me.

I want to thank everyone for their comments and suggestions. I did not mean to open a can of worms, I just wanted to get alot of different opinions because I was thinking of switching my dog's food. You all have been very helpful to me, and I appreciate this very much. Thank you, Dawn Bonome

I feed Nutro Max Natural to my 12 GSD's ranging from 7 months to 12 years and have had good results. The one we use is the green bagged one with real chicken and lamb protein; not the newest Ultra they recently released. We used the Nutro Max Active adult but after several months some of the pack developed allergies to it that went away when we changed the protein source. Although the 35 pound bag is priced $25.99 my pet store gives me a 10% discount for buying in bulk as well as a bag free every 10. This coupled with the Nutro breeder programs bag free every six gets my overall cost down to under 50 cents per pound. We also supplement our food with spirulina: a dried blue-green algae. It helps replace the nutrients that are lost when the food is processed. It is also an excellent source of the plant matter and phytonutrients a dog would get in the wild eating the intestines of it's prey, which are mostly grazers.
