I come from a vegetarian family. No meat is cooked at home. Beef is a big no-no in our religion. Please recommend a vegetarian diet that is complete.

OK. You are vegetarian. Why has your dog be vegetarian too? People are omnivores but dogs are not. If you think that your dog has to be vegetarian too and you love animals why don't you try the holistic formulas of dry food such as EaglePach holistic select? There are also many others... In my opinion it is not so healthy, in any case...

i know of dogs who never even sniffed meat in their lives. I guess its unjust on our part to force them to forego whats best suited for them. Its unethical. Just give him meat once and see how he relishes it.I don't mean to offend anyone but its the same religion issue with me for beef, but my wife has bent rules for him and feeds him 1/2 kg of Beef everyday apart from the other stuff. And we have'nt felt guilty one bit since the time we've done this. I hope that god keeps smiling at us.

Feed your dog a high quality dry food. No preperation is required. A vegetarian diet could never be complete. Eg. Eukanuba, Royal Canine

If you don't want to feed beef, that is ok. Feed your dogs a high quality lamb and rice or chicken and rice brand, but dogs are carnivores. They should always have meat. If you can't accept that, you should not own dogs. That might sound a bit harsh, but that is how I feel about it. For me, just the thought of not feeding your dogs a proper diet is cruel. Sorry, Chris

Dr. Pitcarin thinks that dogs can live quite well on a vegetarian diet, his book offers some homemade recipes using other protein sources. There is also a commercial diet on the market as Saoa said and it comes in kibble as well as canned. I have fed a GSD with food allergies a non-meat diet for almost a year, he lost a lot of weight and did not seem to thrive on it, but he was not a really healthy dog from birth.

Can't understand the problem: as Charisma said, just feed good dry food and have done with it!

There are a few good breeders in india who are strict vegies themselves due to religious beliefs but feed beef to their dogs . However, for a non-doggie conservative family, it is tough. I am not sure how pricey dry food is now in India - but if it is affordable, that is your best bet.

Shantha, Do not own a dog if your religion is that strict. Matter of fact don't own any animals who has 4 very pointy fangs in their mouths. oh by the way... You certainly know how to be a hypocrite. First your asking cooking advices with beef and salt and now you're telling us that you're in a a strict vegetarian religion family. If anybody is wondering what i'm talking about heres the thread of what i'm talking about. http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins_read/21559.html

I have heard dogs being on all veggie/fruit diets and they seem to do well. Only thing you could do is try and see :)
