Hello everybody, I am new to this board and wanted to know if anybody elses GSDs dunk their heads in their water when they get hot.  I've never noticed this with my other dogs, but this is my first GSD.  He is very active, 3yrs old, and 74lbs.  After about 5-10 minutes of ball or frisbee time he will dunk his head up to his eyes and come back for more playing.   He is not drinking much when he does this, just maybe a couple slerps.  Is this normall or just something my dog does to help cool himself.  Also, I am in Oklahoma and the temps been in the 70s lately.  Thanks for any opinions.

I have a female that does it all the time and she'll even dive for rocks in the river.  She's a water freak.

I see, sounds like it's pretty common then.  He does love to swim when we go to the pond.  And they always run back to you and see how much of your pants they can get wet with all that water dripping of the faces.  LOL!

LOL on the down side.....no hose is safe if left unattended.

On the hottest days of the year mine like to dig holes in the shade to escape the heat.   Its better than water for the long haul.    Mine love the water and one does actually try to go under water.  All I worry about is maybe an ear infection sometimes do to the water conditions.   They wont drown..lol.  A cool dirt hole is what they like though when the temps go really high.

Oh my gosh,  finally someone else has crazy gs dogs just like we do.  Shadow our female drinks water the same way, dunking her face to her eyeballs.  Many times she dumps the water bucked playing in it.  All three of our dogs also like chase the water hose, and if you shoot the stream right at them, they bite the water all the way up to the nozzle.

The play soccer, and hike, push and flip their dog dishes all over the yard.   They have even popped a leather basketball.

They are such a joy to have.

In hot weather, I leave a full bucket out on the porch for the dogs, as well as keeping their indoor water bowls filled. I have to change the water nearly daily, due to the following 'game':

Step 1: Star comes and drops her filthy dirt-encrusted kong into the bucket, then tries to paw it out.

Step 2: Ranger comes along, and dunks his whole head into the bucket, and grabs the kong off the bottom!

That's funny, my dog does the same thing with his kong and other toys.  You should see him try to get his soccer ball out of his water bucket!

LOL my freak uses the toilet when it's cold outside.
