It is all a shame, because it really is the dogs themselves that end up suffering. What amazes me is now that some of these so called breeds have been around for a few years how much they are now becoming undesirable. I heard from many shelter workers how they have been starting to flood into the shelters!

People don't even consider the compatibility of these dogs in physical structure or temperament. Out in my area, pet stores sell these dogs for $1000-2500+. It's outrageous. Last one that blew my mind was a "Bullmation", bulldog/dalmation. Great idea, lets see how many health problem you can fit into one dog, right? Best part is, you have NO idea what went into your designer dog. I just saw a "malti-poo" that clearly had American Eskimo in it, and I used work with a "labradoodle" that matured to be the size and body proportions of a standard dachsund. She paid $1500 for it.
The only hybrids I would lend credence to at this point are labradoodles from the Australia Rutland Manor and similar breeders. I have worked with several, and they have been very consistent in type, healthy with very good temperments. They are multigenerational doodles and before the big designer dog rush, it was cheaper to import one of their dogs than buy one from a pet store.
If you want a freakin mutt and you have two grand burning a hole in your pocket, for crying out loud, go adopt a dog and donate your money to a worthy cause. There's a great bumper sticker on cafepress.com that says: Designer Dogs Available Today at Your Local Shelter.

It's the truth. They're literally selling mutts for big bucks. No special testing done of the breeding pairs, no special training, screening, etc.
Basically, if you have the money, you get the mutt...uh....excuse me, designer pet.
