Koots,

I've met some trainers I didn't like...and I'll add these guys to the list ! On another note...I've never "met" an electrician I didn't like...lol

If I can be responsible for someone NOT choosing these trainers, and putting their dog at risk... I will feel some better.

I will also feel better when Merc goes back to wanting to tug.... Which is not yet.

Thank You Koots !

There are a lot of police handlers that are NOT good trainers!
A good handler has shown ability to train their assigned dog; a good trainer shows the ability to train what’s put in front of them.
There is big difference in the two!

I would second what Gustav says about Police training dogs; it is also true in the UK, where the general level of involvement & commitment always seems to me to be better than with many US LE Depts, from the outside. Sadly not everybody who gets to be a Dog Handler cares enough about what they do or how they do it to even be a good trainer of their own dog, although they 'get by' with operational handling, much less have the ability to train more or less 'any' dogs.

Hundmutter, what are you basing your assessment/comparison of US law enforcement dog training commitment from? Just curious?

Gustav, the different attitudes and degrees of knowledge, experience and commitment can be gleaned in many ways. Even at a distance.  From assorted comments on here (PDB), and  elsewhere, by serving Officers who are, or claim to be, LE dog handlers,  versus what Officers are shown doing on videos and in news broadcasts featuring Police activity using dogs - both good and bad - over the years; and commentary (or lack of it) about those scenarios.  From occasional contributions by American LE personnel to UK Police, and Dog, magazines. Comparison with similar comment from our own UK serving dog handlers, representing a cross-section of our different regional Police Forces (roughly equivalent to differing States), some of which have vastly different 'takes' to others on dog use.

From the point of view of gleaning info on the different levels of ability here at home, too much hanging about at a variety of Police venues while dog training, and testing, exercises are going on, and things like that, again, built up over the years.
