The OP lost credibility with me when they claimed that the PAF 'spread to his eyes'--simply not possible, since the condition is very specific as to where on the dog's body it manifests.

Now, if the OP is trying to say that the dog went on to develop pannus, which is also a disorder linked to autoimmune activity, that's a different story, and all dogs that develop PAF do NOT also develop pannus, nor do all dogs that develop pannus also develop PAF--they are two distinct conditions, and while the conditions certainly can affect a single dog simultaneously, there is no evidence to suggest that development of one of the conditions predicates or increases the susceptibility the development of the other.

And yes, Alkarah, has a very good reputation among the American show line kennels, but like any GSD kennel there will be instances wherein a pup gets a bad hand dealt them during the shuffling of the genetic deck of cards, since the breed itself has within it so many different and genetically complex ailments that can develop.

Bingo, Hexe!

I, too, have heard good things about Alkarah. When I first was wanting to buy a registered dog, it was one of the kennels recommended to me by someone who's been in the breeding game a long time, but breeds the 'wrong' breed (Cardigans) for my lifestyle. Can't imagine Cardis doing well in deep snow...

? SS, Alkarah breeds American showline GSDs, though they have infused West German show lines into their program as well. Don't know if they breed Corgis as well or not, off the top of my head, but they might--the two breeds do well together in the same household, and many GSD folks in the US have, if not breed, Corgis, and it's often the breed that GSD owners switch over to if they find themselves unable to physically handle a GSD because of age or injury. But Alkarah most definitely breeds GSDs, first and foremost.

Hexe, you misunderstood my post. The person that recommended them breeds Cardis, and she knew I wanted a GSD, though she did offer to sell me one of her pups!

I've often thought Cardis look like GSDs with short legs, and that has kind of attracted me to them. But I can't see one doing well in snow, so if I did go for a smaller breed, it would have to be something taller.

I've always liked spaniels and mini schnauzers. My mom had 2 springers that were great dogs, though the coats are a bit high-maintenance.

Geez, does a GSD owner have the right to complain about coats??   Roll eyes
