New puppy arrived a couple of weeks ago and first vet check was today. Vet wants to put on Sentinel for heartworms and for flea & ticks she recommended Advantix or Vectra, with moving to Bravecto after 6 months. I told her that I needed to research first and I would get back to her. I know many here have a great deal of experience so I wanted to check here for recommendations. For a background, I do live in Southern US (Virginia) where it is currently humid and 94 degrees. Ticks are a definite problem, and I know not to get the lyme "vaccine". Any recommendations are appreciated!

Thanks,
CSS

We use Vectra for our shepherds. In the past have tried the Seresto collars however they did not work for us and we went back to Vectra.

I have been using nexgard and sentinel spectrum. We are outside in the woods and park everyday, and in 2 years I have only seen literally 1 tick on my dog. Dog is very healthy and weighs a solid 90 lbs. First year of life was spent on Origen LBP and currently is on raw combined with Abady's flagship product ( State of the Art granular formula for adult dogs ). I have also gotten very good results with purina pro biotic ( very firm non smellly stools ( 1-2  load per day ), no bad gas or bad breath, and no doggy smell. Proof of pudding is in the eating, let folks who talk back it up with some pics of their dog's health condition. Dark color of poop due to  chlorophyll caps.

I live in CT and both my dogs get the Lyme vaccine. So many people and dogs have been affected with this common disease. Why would you not vaccinate for Lyme's?

I use Heartgard but do not give it year round. Good article about heartworm:  http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2016/08/28/heartworm-disease-dogs.aspx?utm_source=petsnl&utm_medium=email&utm_content=art1&utm_campaign=20160828Z1&et_cid=DM115247&et_rid=1639933826

I do not use any flea/tick chemicals.  I live in Northern Ilinois (rural area)  but in the summer my dogs also go to the mountains of Utah and the U.P. of Michigan.  It's been at least two years since I picked a tick off of them.  Try a natural repellent (especially as a pup) and if that doesn't work then resort to the chemicals.

starting from this winter I am planning to introduce a detox in the heart of the winter and then switch back to the preventatives.
