Hi, all. I'm planning on purchasing crates online this weekend to get ready to start my puppy litter with crate training. I just want them to get familiar and comfortable being in their own crate. I plan on sending the pups home in the crate they use. My question is does anyone have an idea what size crate to get a puppy that is 6-10 weeks old? They are 6 weeks now and going home between 8 and 10 weeks. I am out of the loop as I can't remember what size I got for my bitch when she was little.

As a side note, yes...this was a planned litter with the sire and dam holding 15 titles between them (7/8 split) and 15 health clearances (6/9 split). I bred my exceptional bitch to produce my next competition dog (my bitch is nationally ranked in obedience). All the rest of the puppies have been sold to excellent homes.

So, hoping people can give me some size ideas as to if they use a small or medium size crate for a puppy this age? Dimensions? Hoping to order 7 crates tomorrow!!!

Thank you in advance!!!

I can't remember the measurements but I'd get what is equal to a #300 Crate...Whenever I have to ship a puppy I buy the crates at Wal-Mart...They're about $50.00 including tax...

Also check airline regulations regarding size of crate if you are shipping by air.

Just remembered...Go to a Tractor Supply Co. too...They have "Remington Crate" in Green/White...Usually good prices on them there...

Thanks but I don't ship my puppies as I require they picked up! I was just hoping someone who recently raised a puppy or a breeder could tell me what they typical use... dimension-wise before I place the order. The local pet stores do not have crates set up (they are boxed) so that would not help either! Thank you!

My pup was air shipped in one of those green/tan crates, probably the same type as Q-man mentions, and about the size of a 300.

Also, congrats on the litter, and have fun raising your next competition dog.

Not sure why Bob's post isn't valid just because they won't be riding on an airplane. Like a few said, a 300 is the right size. They'll get enough use out of it that they should be housebroken before needing a new one.

Thanks, all. Well, it just seems a 300 would be too big as it is for 30-50 pounds. I do, remember, making the mistake 6 years ago of getting a crate slightly too big and having my puppy pee in one end and still be able to curl up dry in the other.

This crate is just to get them "started and acquianted" and the new owners will have to get the next size up when it is time.... and putting a 6 week puppy in a size 300 right now doesn't seem like it would work well from my past experience.

Thus, my request for other opinions.....

But, thanks anyways for the opinions and I think Bob IS spot on if I was looking for a crate to grow with the pup and it had a divider!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Smiley,

If your concern is only to provide a safe and secure means of transfer for a 9 week puppy going to its first home, then I can tell you I fit Beau in a soft carry on bag for air travel, dimensions at around 19 inches tall. He just made it, a week later and it would have been uncomfortable.

If you are worried that the ears might touch for a short trip, when standing or sitting, then I think 22 inches in height will be best. The prices are in the $25 and up range, then.

I am going on the understanding you aren't providing a crate for long term training, just immediate safe transport.

I understand Smiley

1. wants to crate train the pups
2. wants the new owners to get the crates
3. no shipping, but picking up puppy and crate

# 300 should be fine, but in case the # 400 are not that more expensive, I´d buy # 400 - the new owners may use them for quite some while - and I´d buy plastic crates, easy to clean ( Q gave good tips ).

OT, but I love your warranty...you really try to do the best you can - I´d buy a dog from you...
