For those of you that do private detection work or security work, what insurance companies are you using? I'm not looking for plans that only cover vet costs for the dog like Trupanion or PetPlan, more interested in liability insurance. I want to get my dog insured asap so I can start working her at different properties before her certification.

What you should do is get a business license and find a broker via your local credit union or what have you. You can't really effectively just pick a company like you can with car insurance. Make sure you not only have liability insurance but also D&O. Make sure you tell the company exactly what it is you want to cover.

Thanks for the advice, what do you mean by D&O? I spoke to a broker today thats going to get some quotes for me but want to make sure I have everything covered before committing to a plan.

Sorry. Directors and Officers. That is what will protect you if someone sues you. Liability will cover you if someone gets hurt on your property, but D&O will help if someone sues you for messing up on the job or damaging someone else's property. I have General Liability, Professional Liability, and D&O. Also an umbrella policy. It is not cheap, that's for sure.

You need a custom insurance where they assess individual risks or your particular. You need to start calling insurance brokers and ask them if they can help you or direct you the right way.
It seems that such insurance would be expensive and it could be depending on, but may not be so bad. If you live in AZ I can PM you my agent 's phone number.

The broker just got back to me today...quoted a $2500 premium with liability coverage for 1 million, that is a little ridiculous. I'm going to keep looking, that is way over what I've heard others say they pay.

by jillmissal on 13 September 2018 - 20:09

@astrovan, that's pretty much a normal price. I pay that plus a little more. You can't shop around for lower rates on this type of insurance like you can with car insurance. People who say they pay less do not have the appropriate coverage nor do they understand it, no doubt.

I am sympathetic as every year when insurance paying time rolls around it really grinds my gears, but that's how it goes I guess.

I found a place that specializes in kennels and dog trainers that quoted a very reasonable price with twice the liability coverage. Going to check out the details, hopefully it covers everything I need. If anyone is interested PM me and I can give you the insurance company's info
