I promised I would post if I ever considered another Shepherd after a devastating loss of my last after almost 14 years. I am back and looking after 2 years. My last shepherd was Alexis vom Enckhausen (Cay Vom Osterburg Quell (sire) Rannie Vom Parchimer Land (dam). I could not have asked for a better dog. Beautiful, noble, strong, intelligent, and loyal to her death.

In considering a new female pup, I have high respect for Mike Diehl as he helped arrange the breeding of my last puppy. Wanted to list the litter of pups and get your thoughts as I am looking for a strong East German/Czech line. There is a set of pups on the Diehl K9 site from Tina Fihrak ZVV1 and Santo Honajzer. Originally I wanted pups from Irmus, but am considering this litter. I will be visiting the pups before a purchase.

There are a lot of breeders out there- I have seen a lot of pups that I don't think follow the intentions of the original German lines; I'm not interested in those. Also, there seems to be a fine set of pups from Kraftwerk K9. I've been very hesitant of purchasing from Kraftwerk due to the seeming puppymill appearance of the site (I can't imagine getting a puppy site unseen or having it sent by itself to me). I've also been scared off by multiple complaints against them. I'm not interested in mass production of pups! I will be traveling to the pups and traveling back with one regardless of where it is located.

With all that said, wanted to get the communities input- especially those with some experience either with the breeders or with the similar lines. Will look forward to your input.

I don't mean to nitpick, but without even researching the pedigrees, the parents of your last dog are East German/DDR, not Czech...so if you want a dog with those lines (albeit a little further back than your last one ;) ), you might concentrate on those who still breed those lines- yes, some are behind some Czech dogs, but some are also behind some very nice dogs of both East and West German lineage. I would either clarify what you're looking for (ie, take out the word Czech since your dog was not Czech) or keep an open mind to other lines that might have the traits you were so enthralled with in your last dog, and that will take someone with some knowledge of what those dogs produced, temperament-wise. Do your homework and be cautious. Hope that helps.

Thank you Jenni- will do. Do you have anyone else you recommend? I'm very likely going with the Diehl pups. I'm going to be the first to admit I am an amateur on the lineage, but couldn't be happier with Alexis.

Sistrus, would you mind making a pedigree entry for your Alexis, and, if you wish, posting it here with a live link?
Good luck with your search, good GSDs are still around.

Thank you Living Fence.. I'll try, here is a copy/paste link of Alexis:

I don't know why but she doesn't seem to come up in a current search..

It seems Alexis had a fairly strong DDR lineage with some SV registrations as well. The pups I am looking at now are slightly different: Tina Fihrak has more Czech, and Santo Honajzer also has more Czech, not the DDR lineage.

I want to stick with the familiar. Another breeder who focuses on DDR lines is Shraderhaus K9. Some of her dogs look quite similar to what I had; I'm more than willing to wait for the right pup.

Let me know if you need anything else. Thank you in advance..

Nice pedigree on Alexis.

I am with hntrjmpr434 regarding Kraftwerk. I hear that at one time they seemed to focus on breeding that was about maintaining/strengthening the GSD breed, but that no longer appears to be their intent. I have seen a lot of KW dogs over the past three years that were either very timid or were bred with aggression in mind. Even after talking with Wayne, it seemed that he chose aggression as a way to compensate for drives.

Diehl on the other hand is not what i would consider a breeder in general. YES he does breed but imho his breeding is not about $$. He has a love and respect for the GSD and is focused on breeding's that he feels will produce even temperament, solid nerve, great drive dogs.

Thank you Gigante and Cutaway- no worries; i'm not going to consider Kraftwerk. Everyone on here has been fantastic with their advice. My biggest concern was the temperament/etc matching Alexis as her breeding focuses more on the DDR lines and Mike's current pups are more Czech.

Cutaway- You are right on the mark. I know Mike is a passionate and sincere individual which is why I had leaned toward his pups; my only concern is getting a pup that I am most suited to. I love the GSD in general, but am looking for a dog whose temperament, appearance, and behavior matches my last girl.

Your advice is greatly appreciated..

Glad you are "ready" for a new family member.
I wouldn´t care too much about "lines", but about the parents and the breeder.
Try to see potential sires and dams ( clubs are always the best way to go ), maybe you are even able to see older siblings.

Just my opinion, but I´d stay away from breeders with a lot of dogs, they "need" to make money, a small "hobby"breeder normally loves his dogs.
Ask for proof of HD/ED results, in case you want to participate in any sport, go with a breeder who trains and titles by himself.

There are different temperaments in almost every litter - that said, it´s not necessarily about the lines, but mostly about the dog in question.

And, I guess you already know it, but no dog will be able to "replace" your Alexis - every dog is different, but special on its own kind.
Just open your heart and don´t compare.
