Come on guys, it can sometimes be quite difficult to tell whether a 'brownish' Sable, especially if its a LSH, is actually a Black & Gold. There was a whole thred devoted to this a few years ago. Particularly when we have just the one photograph to go on. Although I have known dogs where it was equivocal even in the actual flesh. The baby puppy pix are the way to tell for sure, if they are available.

Honest question - does it matter, is it important?

Tan points, saddle back, bi - color...?
Out of the picture for me it´s a ( nice ) sable.

There are terms for black and tan, sable, and black, as "allowed" in this breed,
there are terms for liver, blue, and white, as "not allowed",
everything else isn´t even mentioned.

I understand it´s "interesting", but the breed should define itself about working ability, FCI standard (including the allowed colors), and health.

People are breeding for "eye catchers" instead of dogs fitting to the standard ( I will stress it again: working ability, FCI standard, health ).

I don't fault the OP for their curiosity. They simply want to learn to call something they are seeing, correctly. Does it matter to the dog or it's abilities? Not a whit, but if we asked that same question to every post here, we might as well not have a board or anything to discuss.

Some people like the details, others the big picture. It is all good.

The below link shows the development of a sable from birth to 20 months of age. Here you can see how different a sable puppy looks at birth. However as an adult, such a puppy may indeed be difficult to tell from a black and red dog.
