8 wks old male Mounting his stuff toys? by fawndallas on 12 June 2012 - 19:54 |
| I did not expect this. My choice male has taken to mounting his large stuff animals. Any thoughts on this? Is this because his is more of an Alpha? Is he lacking some socialization? Is this unusual (he seems to be a bit young to be interested in this)? Should I discourage this? If so how? |

| I take it as a very, very good sign. Congratulations!! The best sch dog I have had, one that top competitors and judges slavered over, did this at 8 weeks. He mounted and fought with the stuffed toys, until he destroyed them. Then, he pissed on them for good measure. |

| Normal..If you dont like it,,give him smaller toys. |
by joanro on 12 June 2012 - 20:51 |
| See what happens when the mother isn't registered!! LOL. Instead of smaller toys, I'd give him a big life sized stuffed GSD, his ego will explode!!! By all means, do NOT correct him for this, but redirect his attention if you want. It's as normal as chewing on new things. |

| Time to read a good book on dog behaviour! Socialization phase! Pups experiment with their body and what others think of it - or ...what happens with that pup when I do this....or....I'm the king of the castle...n u? Let your pup play with many other dogs of all sizes and let your pup be around anything and everything (on leash and with you, not alone). |

| My Kali used to take her stuffed toys & lay down next to them, & then lift her head up & look at them, with a puzzled look on her face. Then she would push them right up to her belly with her nose, & put her head back down & wait, then look at them again, for all the world like she was expecting them to nurse her. It was cute, but kind of pathetic. Beckett would just 'kill' his, then try to eat them. **sigh** Boys. Sounds like you've got a little pistol! jackie harris |

| Normal puppy behaviour! Don't worry! |
by GSDguy08 on 12 June 2012 - 23:55 |
| Tingiesandtails that's a good way to have another dog ruin your puppy! I would not ever let my puppy play with any and every dog of every size. That's just asking for one dog to end up bullying and ruining your pup. I've found the mounting at this age to be a dominant trait. One I had did this at that age as well, it had nothing to do with lack of socialization either. |

| I think most dog experts consider mounting toys and other objects a play activity when a puppy is the perp. Every litter I had produced one or two individuals, males and females, that were interested in mounting their litter mates, towels, and toys. They outgrew it. |

| My first thought was...Was the Stuffed Toys...Male or Female Stuffed Toys...? Could tell a lot about your puppy....tee hee hee...! |
by fawndallas on 13 June 2012 - 01:43 |
| Lol...this is all that I thought just was not 100% sure. I was just very surprised at this. Sign of dominance makes since. This pup is also the one that has been 1st in most very thing. ----------------- As for destruction, none yet, but I am sure it is coming. ------------- The sex of the toy is a big red bull dog with a big bone in it's mouth. ---------------- I do miss the other pups, but it is nice to only focus on 3 instead of 8. |

| Read the other thread on here about the same thing Chez was kidding but he said if you bred better dogs, at 8 weeks they would be doing same thing...lol SO tells you doesn't it Perfectly the thing a dominant male or female does..my cocker spaniel did it when she was 9 weeks old.. Nothing to worry about....he will out grow it...and he may chose your leg or shoe next. lol distract him then...no punishing or yelling at him for it...just move leg and throw him a bone.. oops a chew bone...lol YR |

| I'm not sure a puppy that mounts objects is necessarily a dominant dog. |
by Bob McKown on 13 June 2012 - 12:55 |
It,s not. |
by GSDguy08 on 13 June 2012 - 17:59 |
| Bob, Blitzen, what is it then? The pup I had that did it was very dominant aside from that. At 8 weeks he mounted a huge pillow downstairs (don't worry, no one actually used that) and toys as well. He did eventually grow out of that, but he was always a dominant dog aside from that. It just seems like the ones I have seen do that......were dominant.....maybe a coincidence though. |

| Pups will often not hump anything at all. You'll be watching the little buggers and they are just strolling along humpin the air..... I've had lots of cockers just start humping like loons when they are being groomed. No one is even close to them, they just go into poundy poundy mode.... Jizzing all over the place...It's puppy behavior NOT always dominance. You will have a hard time trying to convince me they are attempting to dominate air :) Puppies hump it's normal |

| GUY: Do not pay any attention to the negative remark It;s not It sure was with the ones in my litters that did it. No one here claimed it is a Trait to judge the puppy by, it was my remark that the ones of mine that did it were dominant they sure were not woosies... most of them never did it more that a few times. ' Even mutts do it, and I would bet that mutt was the one who found his way around the neighborhood pretty well... BOB: tell us what your vision is about it , if you are so easy to hollar IT is not..??????? DO you think it is a fault or a nerve problem or a genetic weakness. Female pups do it as often as the male pups do...so what is your medical , professional opinion of why so many of them do it...are they mentally ill, deranged or mixed up prototypes of failures in the breed??? | byrnjulf.....the ones I speak of never did this to the air.....ever......nor did their "stuff" go everywhere either. |
