Hip X-Rays by Runag on 05 July 2012 - 13:35 |
Hi Folks have had the x-rays done and sent away for evaluation. What do the experts here think? Vet said he couldn't get his legs exactly straight over the knees - I noticed the left leg seems to be in different position but that apart what's the verdict. I have my fingers crossed ( and toes) ![]()

Fair to mild.... the one is not in very tight. Since there is no L/R marker visable I can only say, when looking at it face on, it's on the right. The other one doesn't have that much coverage either, but is in nice and far... Debby

Hi djc That is his left leg. Could that be attributed to the position of the dog when being x-rayed?

Hopefully, fair, but I would like to see the femur head a little deeper in the socket, particularly left side and a little tighter on the left side also, right side (our left side of screen) a little better but same applies. Best of luck Nan PS: Did you send in to SV for evaluation or OFA?

Nans gsd >>PS: Did you send in to SV for evaluation or OFA?<< Hi, am in UK so sent in to BVA. I am so worried :( - I just want my boy to be healthy.

Well really I don't think you are going to have a problem with his performance any way the grading comes out. They look pretty fair to me and you have to realize to get a good or however they are graded in your country, they need to be impecible almost. So as far as working hips I do not see a problem with these. But whatever you do with him, always remember to warm him up first just like any athlete would and keep him lean for his entire life; I really like the muscle that the raw diet provides for these dogs which until 2 years ago I did not see when I fed my guys kibble dog food so that might be something for you to think about with this guy. His muscle tone is what can HELP to keep these hips strong. Best of luck with him Nan

Thanks Nan, I am training for working trials - no jumping yet but he seems to have no problem with his hips after his training or during play. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

I had one almost identical to this and got a Fair in OFA, USA. Wish you the best with your results. Weezy.

Some of the left leg's appearance could be from positioning, but not all. The right femoral ball is in the socket as far as it can be, but the socket is shallow. I don't think your dog will have a problem with performance no matter what the rating is, until old age. Good luck!!

Need to see the knees. I can already tell they're not rotated properly, but regardless of what the grading board says, the dog should be fine- those hips aren't bad.

Jenni78 >>Need to see the knees<< o.k. here is the full x-ray. Thanks to all you folks who have taken the time to look at this and especially for the reassurance. It is much appreciated. ![]()

Was he awake or alseep? Legs should be pulled down straighter with the knees rotated inward but the positioning isn't horrible and is fairly straight. I really would not worry about this dog at all in terms of function.

The positioning is quite poor and it may make the hips look much worse. I would not send this x ray for official evaluation. The knee caps are pointing out but they should be in the middle of the knee cap like a bull's eye, however they are not. Femurs are OK but not totally parallel. These 2 conditions in combination can downgrade the hips 25%-50% . I can tell you that in any case this dog will not have problem with its hips during it's life. Thus do not worry about your dog. However if you want the x ray for breed-ability purposes then they need to be redone. look at this: http://www.alpinek9.com/Hips.html Study it and do not accept poor x rays from your vet. Hans

Hi everyone I got Luthers hip score results today - R4 + L8 = Total 12 I am just wondering, the left leg was hurt as a puppy (around 9months) - he slid on a polished wooden floor and couldn't put any weight on that leg for a few hours. I took him to a vet who didn't x-ray and said that he'd probably just pulled a muscle or something. The dog was fine the next day so now I am not sure if the leg was injured and not treated resulting in a higher score on the left leg or was the soreness because of the way his hip is. Any ideas? Whatever, I said I would publish the result for those who replied to the original message so here it is. Cheers

Is it a BVA score (UK)?
by Runag on 19 July 2012 - 17:16 |
Hi Dantes >>Is it a BVA score (UK)?<< Yes, so should equate to Normal I think.
by Prager on 19 July 2012 - 17:18 |
You ad it up and then get a score? Is that waht you do? Thus it would be equal to OFA Fair? http://www.offa.org/hd_grades.html Hans
