OMG: No, I am not happy about that either Jyl; I did want to mention to you that I am trying Canidae PURE Sea. it's ok so far, am finishing my 3rd 24/pound bag. Have to watch weight gains though... Will see after 4th bag. Thx Jyl Nan

PS:  Canidae is approx. l/2 the price of Orijen.  That is attractive to me for now also,  can spend $$ on raw or ?? Nan

PSPS:  Jyl - the one thing I have noticed with Canidae is my sammie boy's coat is staining red in certain areas,  think it is the food as it started shortly after I started Canidae??  Will wait a bit longer though;  see what happens.......Nan

am typing to the rhythm of John Cougar Mellenkamp.....................

Have been using Performance Dog Raw by Tefco in Bklyn. 40 lbs for $75. Dog eats 2 lbs everyday in a couple minutes. Followed by Fortiflora. Before she used Origen LBP and Origen 6 fish, and pooped about 5 times per day, now poops once a day.

Mithuna; sounds like that is working very well for you.. Thx for info on that food and I will look into it. Nan

Nan
There is also Armellino's in Huntington Station , NY where you get 50 lbs raw for $75. Yes Nan its working out, I have given her a  bad habit. When she was refusing the kibble I started by hand feeding her the raw.She will eat the whole 2 lbs in a few minutes BUT only if I hand feed her. If the food is left for her, she takes a much longer time to eat it. Because its raw, I prefer to have her eat it quickly so that  the chance of deterioration. is lessened.

Nans,
Glad the Canidae seems to be working for you. I do like their grain free line a little more than their non grain free formulas.
As for the red tinge to the coat.... Try Solid Golds sea meal supplement. It is a kelp supplement and works very well. I have used it for around 15 or so years and it has always worked great... Coats are dark with no red tinged and noses are black.

No need to hand feed a healthy dog. He/she will eat when hungry enough. It's is a very bad habit to encourage. Sit the food down and give her a set time to eat it., no longer than 10 minutes. Pick up what's left, and either refrigerate it or dump it. Always let her see what your are doing with the food. Then comes the hard part - absolutely nothing to eat, just fresh water, until the next feeding time when it begins again. No treats, nada. You must not add gravies or other things to tempt her appetite and don't keep switching food trying to find something you think she might like better. Pick a good food and stick with it.

Unless they were sick and ready to pass away, my dogs have never taken longer than 2 minutes to finish a dish of food regardless of what it was. You are the alpha, right?

Blitz
She eats all of it in about 3 minutes as well but ONLY if it is given to her by hand. She does not have food aggression so absolutely no issues about having my hand bitten .No shes not sick ( very active and always into doing something or the other ).
The habit started when I was moving her over from kibble to raw. She suddenly did not want the kibble. What are some of the downsides of this habit?

by Nans gsd on 02 August 2015 - 15:08

Mithuna; I am not here to tell anyone how or what to feed their dogs, but really, hand feeding is not a good idea, have to agree with Blitzen on this one; put food down,10 minutes down (or maybe 20 minutes if you have the time) and then pick up and put in refrigerator until next meal. Nan

PS: what if you cannot be there for one or ten of her meals? Someone else has to feed her?? Then what??

by Blitzen on 02 August 2015 - 16:08

Mithuna, I'm not sure why you would even ask such a question. I'm guessing you're going to challenge everything I say to you about letting a dog think it is the alpha by being allowed to decided what it will eat, when it will eat, and how it will eat.  To me it's only common sense to not cave to a  dog to the point that you that you need to handfeed it. Some of  your first posts here already demonstrated that your dog needs an alpha owner, but you didn't want to hear that either. So why don't you contact some of the trainers you are working with or the people who have given you all the information on correct bloodlines, etc  and ask them if they handfeed their working dogs.  Ask some of the posters here who you respect.

I have had SL's since 91 and have never had to handfeed a dog unless it was sick. Before that I had another working breed for over 35 years and never had to handfeed one of them either. I had one GSD that thought he was going to get something better if he waited it out, sat by the cupboard  and rolled his eyes back in his head as if he were going to pass out if he didn't get a pupperoni. On the 10th day he ate like he was on death row and never missed a meal after that.

GSD's are take advantage dogs; let your dog win the food drama competition and you are going to pay for it for the rest of the dog's life lives in many other ways.
