Rebel was solid black when born except for a very small white spot on his chest. He remained that way until he was about 1 year old, then the brown hairs started appearing on his front legs, and a couple of months later, I noticed them also on his rear legs. He is now over 2 years old, and all legs are getting progressively more brown. Slowly spreading like a rash would spread. or like brown ink starting to leak through black material. Parts that were definitely black are now turning "dirty" brown.

My black gsd has bleed thru. She is tested and is indeed recessive black. She came out of a black and tan sire and sable mother. Recessive blacks need both parents to carry for recessive black to get black. Recessive black is not like sable, where one parent HAS to be sable to get sable. Sable is dominant. You can go to ddc vet dna center and test dogs for color and colors they carry. So no need to guess. :)

I was also able to test and see if she carried for coat.

Just an update my girl Luna still has the Brown bleed through on all four of her legs( it is not a temporary shedding phase). I think it looks kinda cool actually, but now I will be looking into the genetic testing of colors to see when I breed her, what outcomes can possibly arise, and maybe find out more about this Genetic that causes the bleed through.

Yhect "problem"??? You consider some brown hairs a problem? :o Talk about a harmless "problem" to have! LOL.

Susie, a black dog is not how it appears, rather, what it's genetics are. A black dog, bleedthrough or not, cannot contribute anything but a black gene to its offspring. Bleeding does not have any influence on that fact. I have had black dogs who never had another color hair on them their entire lives (Caleb) to dogs who had strong bleeding on legs (Beauty). They are all genetically black dogs.

Thank you, Jen, but in this case the question arises if there are ( not yet testable ) differences of "black" ?!?
As always there must be a reason for the so called "bleed through" ...
Like I said, I never cared about colors, just a guess...

I guess the brown hairs are not as much of a problem as the umbilica hernia that he had when I got him, and his cryptorchidism which I just fixed by having him neutered and his curly too long tail.. But when I bought the dog I was adamant about wanting a solid black male, and paid extra, though I did settle for a small white spot on his chest.

I have owned solid black males since I was 15, and that is over 60 years ago. I consider them my good luck charm. And sure enough, I ran into a terrible bunch of bad luck this past 7 months. A half dollar size hole in my foot in November which would not heal which finally sent me to a skilled nursing facility for 5 weeks for 4 infusions of antibiotics daily..

While there a very tiny hole in the line to my bathroom toilet caused mold everywhere in the bathroom and ruined the bathroom sink cupboard and floor, it caused the ceiling below in my rec room to fall down and ruin the carpet downstairs and some antique furniture.

Now we all know that I can not blame that on the dog... and I don't. But all I am trying to say is that I wanted a solid black male not one with brown legs, and I did not get that.
