| I know I've posted about this before but I cldnt find it again... Ok so I have a 7mnth old female and she drinks soo much that she looks like she's pregnant... I had her on solid gold and she wldnt stop drinking... Then I switched to TOTW and she drank less.. Beings the recall I switched her on Nutrisource chicken n rice grain free and now all she does is wanna drink water.. Before I bring her to my vet who isn't all there... Any adive from someone who's went through this.... Thanks much!! |

| how much is too much water for you? How warm is it were you are? Get her vet checked for uterine infections soon! Does she have a temperature? |

Ellie why not start by checking exactly how much she is drinking, Measure the amount of water you put in her bowl and at the end of the day check how much is left, Do this for a week and keep a record then you can tell your vet exactly how much she is drinking. Take a urine sample collected on the day you take her to the vet. GSDs are very water oriented mine never lap they guzzle the water, they dip their whole head in bucket and it sounds like they are drinking excessivly. Check her temperature. |

| There are some possible health problems if a dog is drinking too much water: pyometra, heart problem or diabetes. You have said that the dog likes like beeing pregnant, this is the possible sign of pyometra infection or heart. Pyometra ussualy occurs 1-2 months after the heath ciclus, but also affect females before first heat, of course this is very rare. If the vet will make ultrasound he sure can see if there is pyometra or heart.For diabetes the vet needs to make blood test. But first you must answer how much is too much water for your opinion.I wish you good luck! |

| I simply know that infections:(ie pyometra) and dry food(kibbles) can cause heavy drinking. Consult you vet. Goodluck. |

| To add to what everyone else has said, kidney disease or failure is another possibility as it can also cause a dog to drink (and urinate) in excess. Other possibilites are a cushings disease and liver shunt. If my 7 month old puppy was drinking so much water that she looked pregnant I'd take her to the vet for a thorough exam, complete blood profile and urinalysis to start with. Other tests may be necessary as well, such as hormone assays and abdominal x-rays and/or ultrasound. It is possible that it is a behavioral issue, but since excess water drinking can be a sign of some serious health issues, I'd want to rule out the possible medical causes first. | And maybe try and find a vet who is "all" there for your dogs health and your sanity.. they are out there you have to do your research and ask other dog people what they think of thier vet!! how often are you feeding her?.. if she is fed once or twice a day with a significant amount of food you need to be careful of bloat when they end up drinking excessive amounts of water right after eating.. take her to a vet..!! good luck |

| Did take her to the vet and they forgot to write down on her vile it was her blood lost it ect.. So I now have another vet did a full blood panel and I am just waiting for the results... Sucks as she is a import from croatia and I've had her for a mnth and I know when (if) her drinking has been increasing since I've had her.. I read that once this drinking starts happening 75 percent of her liver is already damaged... |

| I wonder about kidney failure of some sort but since she is young its unlikely that its chronic but it could be acute from a virus such as leptospirosis (but usually there are other symptoms with this but it can vary depending on the strain) or as others suggested an infection. Have you tried giving her wet food instead of kibble...either canned, homecooked or raw. I think a lot of water gets absorbed through the intestines. I know with people if water is gulped down it isn't absorbed as well as if its taken in small amounts or through food. I think the liver will heal itself and since she's young then I would think there's a good chance it could go back to normal once the vet figures out whats causing the excessive drinking. | pancreatitis will also cause heavy drinking of water. You will also notice weight loss with this. |

Pancreatitis is a possibility. However, I would look at the food source. I feed raw and don't have any problems. Once we tried to add a no grain kibble meal once a week. The result was 4 dogs drinking more water than I could ever imagine! Thought it might be a one time thing, so I tried again a week later, same result. I mean a TON of water. I couldn't believe they could put that much down. Never fed kibble again and never had the issue again. The dogs where all of different age's and weight. It affected them all the same. Good Luck |

| Alright so I brought her to the vet and they did a full blood panel and urine and she has a bacteria infection.. Her white count was high otherwise her blood panel came back normal. So she is going to check enezymes as well but she said everything else looked great!! THANK you all for your help!! I really appreciate it!! |

| hmm THoguht I answered this post... I brought her to the vet they did a full blood and urine panel and everything came back fine cept a high white cell count she is on clavaomax for two weeks.. Thank you all SO MUCH!! |
