Kind of a pet peeve of mine when people count from day of breeding. Days are counted from ovulation. From my vet's website (she is a diplomat in the American College of Theriogenologists, which is the specialty college dealing with reproduction and infertility):

"The gestation period for dogs is 63 days, counted from when the female’s progesterone was about 5.0 ng/ml, or when she ovulated, and not 63 days from when she was bred. This is always a confusing fact and causes a lot of bitches to deliver sooner than what the owner calculated!!"

"Kind of a pet peeve ... when people count from day of breeding"

To be fair to the OP here, I don't think she'd ever read up on the subject; this was a first, surprise litter to her. She's been playing catch-up ever since. Ovulation isn't something we could expect her to know about ...

Agree Hundmutter the other thing is not everyone takes there girl in to the Vet to be tested so there would be no way to know when they ovulated.

Last place I want to take a dog is to the vets office and chance them picking up something.

Counting from day of breeding is all some of us have to go by.

I'm not faulting the OP -- just trying to educate anyone reading this thread. You can have a wide date range if you go by breeding date as it depends if you breed before or after ovulation.

I do know what ovulation is. I've been reading non stop about dog reproduction, and whelping. My breeder friend is here and she says that the puppies have dropped and that she could have them anytime this week.i definitely see that her belly has dropped since last night and her belly is much harder than it used to be. Thanks everyone for the help! I will update tonight.

But not at the point where you might have predicted she'd get pregnant, clearly ! (How DID she come to get pregnant earlier than you intended, anyway ?)

Your friend's pointing out that she has 'dropped' - that, plus all the digging/nesting behaviour and reduced food interest, make it seem the event IS imminent now. Good luck !

She got pregnant earlier than I wanted because I was at a persons house who sells min pin puppies for breeding (I want a boy min pin) and I left my girl dog in their fenced area and they didn't know a male dog was there and when we came back they were tied.

Really we needed to know that to help someone.

I hope she has them tonight.

Hope you have more luck with the pups than you had with that breeder, then ! They didn't know he was out there ? Wow; how careless was that. So are you sure the father is another Min Pin ? (could make a difference re size of puppy, problems getting them out, etc).
