Susie, I think the problem is that this 'bleed through' on black dogs does actually look rather different, from the degree / quality of the tan you get on a young bi-colour. (I'm agreeing with Dawulf here). Looks more brindled, really. See the photo ^^^ Maybe it goes back that far, to when there were some truly brindle early specimens ? It is certainly more mottled in appearance than a gradual spread of true tan plus pencil marks. Whether it would present differently genotypically from bi-colour (or from black) or not remains unsure, until someone studies it properly.

Okay, in German Shepherd Dogs I know about Agouti colors
