Just to add my 2 cents from the other side of the Pond. I can't speak for what is happening in other parts of Europe but I can certainly say a bit about what is going on in the 'four countries of the UK' - because there are certainly ideological and practical differences among England, Scotland, Wales and (the North of) Ireland. And there are a lot of parallels (even if on a numerically smaller scale than in the US and Canada).

Re the Truck Convoy : we haven't got one of those, but we DO have a lot of disaffected & disgruntled truck drivers, who have like all industries been inconvenienced by Covid ... and in our case ALSO by Brexit. Time spent in [ very, very long ] queues on the Motorways to & from British ports has led to time to think and assess, and a heck of a lot of our drivers have protested. Not taking in vaccine compliance so much as an issue, but because what Lobo wrote is similarly true here.

Truckies and their needs have not been taken seriously. Made worse by years of conservative government. Not only do we now have a shortage of professional drivers due to members of other European nations being made to go home, but because Government has turned a blind eye to its responsibilities, just one aspect of which is that the training & qualifying of new HGV drivers has been under-resourced and allowed to wind down, so that now we need more drivers to replace both European citizens AND Covid casualties, we cannot get them trained & employed fast enough. Cue Queues. Add to that the neglect of any good infrastructure for them: the truck stops we do have are woefully inadequate for normal parking up, let alone additional sanitation measures for Covid reduction. They are not the only workers who have been been getting a bum deal for years but now they particularly are expected to step up to the plate and work harder because of the deficiencies. And they are just one example.

I know our Prime Minister is an international joke, but we have to live with it day in & day out. The Government have been too concerned with their friends and relatives making large financial gains all through the Pandemic
to pay much attention to the trail of damage to all sorts of working people & small businesses their cack-handed handling of many parts of the Covid crisis ... and the unnecessary deaths ... has led to. Much based in their arse-licking following of Trump's views, I'm sorry to say.

Which brings me to Boris Johnson claiming credit for the UK speed of vaccine take-up etc. Any fool can see that was less down to him and his Cabinet than due to the hard work of the scientists doing the development, and to our National Health Service Staff working their socks off to get the jabs out to the populace, at the same time as working in overstretched hospitals trying to save as many lives as they could. So of course they want as many as possible to BE fully vaccinated. Who could gainsay that ?

Think of the way the world would have been if nobody had taken up the Smallpox or the Polio immunization projects ? OF COURSE while drugs are new and not had time to be fully tested, we have to face that there are some risks attached. But given you need the disease to appear before you can develop to combat it, and the fact that testing is so much faster & better organised now as we've developed better routines for tackling problems, I'd happily take that risk; better to be one of a tiny number who react badly to a drug than to have half your population and anybody who is immuno-compromised wiped out, than to refuse drugs which are numerically much more likely to help me, surely ? So that's why I got vaccinated, not because I had not asked questions or thought deeply about it.

And I do respect the wishes of those who do not want to take the gamble I was prepared to take; just as I feel no-one should be forced into carrying ID on them all the time, or in order to cast their votes. But I also care that there are people now whose 'normal' lives are gone forever; and whose movements are now severely restricted because they have seen loud protests by folk who don't want to have the vaccine giving all sorts of silly reasons (5G, alien lizards, microchips) rather than just putting a rational case for the right to choose. They are still isolating, 'cos they feel they have to, to avoid getting sick, and they will no doubt feel they have to go on doing that for a long time to come. So I'd rather not let my decisions about my health condemn others to doing things they'd rather NOT do, out of fear. That's why I will continue to try my best to persuade those who are still not vacinated to change their minds.

It is a real disappointment to see that in 2022 this kind of BS still needs to be called out.People using misleading info to better suit some sort of agenda. This last thursday Joe Rogan's podcast comes back on air after he excused himself and promised to do more fact checking for his show.He opens up by saying that Montreal was under 10pm curfew and saying it was just crazy.Although there was a provincial curfew imposed several weeks ago,it is no longer, and restaurants are now open. But I guess that truth didn't suite the message he wants to push. Saying sorry is nice but actions speak louder.
I don't like arguing just for the sake of arguing but I feel it is always important to call out BS and false information when they are perpetuated for dishonest agendas. This has happened too often in the past and sometimes the consequences can be important.

I fully agree, Lobo. But unfortunately, it often doesn't change the minds of those spouting the B.S.!
There are people out there that STILL believe Trump won the election.

The convoy hit Toronto and Barrie today. I was trying to get from where I live (south of Barrie) to a friend who lives in Oshawa. The traffic began to back up near Major Mackenzie, and by the time I hit FInch Ave. it was obvious the 400/401 interchange was going to be a disaster, so I got off at Finch, and took the slow route past the 404 to Victoria Park, then south to the 401. It took me twice as long as normal to get to Oshawa.

On the way home, I took the 404 to Queensville. Lucky for me -found out when I got home that the 400 northbound was at a standstill due to the convoy in the Barrie area!

Many of the hospitals in Toronto cancelled their clinics for the weekend because of the convoy. Local news in the Toronto area is talking about health care workers being harrassed as they are coming into work. PSWs and nurses had to endure protestors shouting at them and calling them 'murderers'.

Sunsilver,
I don't think the idea should be to try to change the minds of those people, but just not letting them get away with trying to pass off false information without checking them. When they repeat lies often enough, many people start believing them and accepting them as truths.
The whole Trump system is based on exactly that.

Sunsilver here is your source.
