Not now because we have been keeping him calm. And this boy is med. to high drive. We did stop giving him the Trazodone. Last time I took him for a walk on soft surface about 3 months ago we went about 1/2 mile he started limping. If I was to take him out and play ball for 15 minutes know doubt in my mind he would be limping. He is over the top with ball drive. You don't know how many times I would just love to take him out and play ball with him. Now keep in mind he just turned a year old last month.

So if he's not medicated but he's rested, and I mean no painkillers, not tranquilizer, does he limp? Then he limps again after exercise? What I'm trying to differentiate is whether he could have DJD *and* pano, and not need surgery at all.

I have seen many x-rays like that where the dog has never limped so I would not be positive that there is a primary lesion causing his pain. If you could find it affordably, you might CT and look for a cause. If none, then it is DJD and pano, and I would not do surgery.

Have you made sure that there is nothing in his shoulder causing pain?

He hasn't been on any medication for awhile. He doesn't limp because we keep him very quiet. No ball playing no running just goes out to do his business and when we are out with him he will follow us around. And in the house we keep him very calm. But when he has slept for a bit and gets up it's very slow and moves slow till he walks a few minutes. Sometimes it looks he limps the first couple of steps. I'm curious has anyone have elbows operated on and what is the success rate. And will I still have to keep my boy calm?

Well had my boy to the vets and he doesn't recommend surgery. It's around 2000.00 per elbow and not always a success and he still will have to limit his exercise. He says there is a shot he can get every month that will make him comfy or a pain pill that he will have to take every day. He says the boy should be treated like he is 10 years old. Not to much exercise and keep him calm. If he lays down for more than an hour he gets up very slow and limps for a bit. So the wife and I don't really know what to do. Has anyone have to go through elbow surgery? The breeder is coming up with all sorts of excuses. He has gone from I don't warranty elbows just hips to I played ball to much with him. Which I didn't I have raised shepherds working and showlines for over 25 yrs. and I know how to limit the exercise. Then he tells me he kept 2 pups behind and he will have their xrays done and go from there. And now he has pasted me on to his daughter and she says I will be dealing with her. She tells me wait till he is 24 months and have them down again. The father of my boy never had his elbows done just hips.

the elbows are not your fault. and regardless of what some will put forth, if it were hips, neither would that be your fault.

this is a breed, developed and bred for the express purpose of very high, very stressful, stop and go, reverse direction on a dime activity of "herding".

if a dog can't play ball, and not injure itself, it's really not on the owner.

Rik is right, Steve. It actually may not be the breeder's fault either; you are right, the breeder should not be trying to blame you or give you a whole load of excuses, but if he was using stock that had OFA or SV cleared elbows there isn't a lot more he could do to prevent this happening in one or more of their offspring. If he had taken risks with that, i.e. not used Xrayed stock, or used stock which had been shown to have any ED, that would be different; and then, too, some onus would have been on you for buying from him if you knew that, rather than choosing another breeder you knew to be using stock which had passed the tests.

Passing the tests does not 100% prevent HD and ED, or any DJD, however; it is still risky. These are conditions endemic to the canine species, they are influenced by a range of genetic configurations and some environmental factors, and they are therefore really difficult to eradicate completely, from the GSD breed or other dogs. Unfortunately there is still an element of pure luck involved in dog ownership. If joint problems don't getcha, something else is almost certain to ! (Auto-immune diseases; skin troubles; epilepsy...).

At least this breeder has indicated willingness to X ray the elbows on the two he has kept; it's not a lot, and it doesn't help you and your poor dog, but if he sticks to that you may have inadvertently helped someone else for the future by reducing their risks.

Had a year old male get one elbow operated on many years ago. The recovery period was the hardest part trying to keep a young lively male at rest for heeling was hard. We got there though and he was given to a family as a pet and never looked back. We were told by the vet at the time he may be bothered with arthritis at an earlier age but he never did as far as I know. Always got good reports from his new owner, but we did loose touch several years back, so haven't heard how he is doing now.

Well the breeder wants all my boys medical records. When the boy firsts started limping took him in for xrays he says looks like a fracture known as Medial Coriniod Fracture. Anyone have to deal with this MCF? I looked it up to see what it meant. And it says caused from elbow dysplasia and as you can see both elbows stage 2 dysplasia. I'm asking these questions because the breeder I got him from has tried everything in the book to no warranty my boys elbows.

Can you post the pedigree to the dog?
Others may want to know which lines to be aware of.
ED has a better chance of being heritable than HD.

Also maybe let others know who the breeder is?
