Sunsilver

Of course, Valk. Some people insist reverse mask dogs are husky mixes (especially the Hobo dogs, because of their black and silver colour.) I just wanted to show it's been a part of the breed for a very long time, and at one time, wasn't discriminated against as it is now.

Apple, I once talked to Carmen about the Hobo dogs. Chuck was in Ontario for quite some time while the TV show was filming here, and did quite a large number of shows with his dogs. Carmen (Carmspack, on this board) went with another friend of hers who was also a trainer and very experienced GSD person. She said both she and her friend could see the 'tell' where Chuck was signalling the dogs what to do.

I saw the dogs perform, too, back in the 1970's, and it really was amazing. Even if he did have some sort of invisible signal for directing the dogs, what he did with them was still pretty incredible. For instance, in your above example, just how would it work?? It's really beyond me to figure out just how he could do such things! And his books really don't reveal his secrets, either!

Now I am very confused. Perhaps the OP is too ?

Baden K9 may claim to have 'the oldest' - "40 year" - continuous line of GSDs, but his website does not seem to include Apple's reported claim that the ancestry included Blondi. Presumably to back up the "oldest" claim he'd have to be able to produce paperwork, and some info on when the dogs he was breeding from left Germany and started in the US ? He seems to be majoring on dogs of this line being blacks; as we have seen, clearly not as Blondi.

So its not clear Apple why you have offered that information, or quote of Prager's, or whatever that is; and why you and Sunsilver are discussing 'London'/Hobo and dogs that do tricks, and reversed mask dogs, as distinct from dogs the SS may have been using in the 30s. It is 2019. The 1930s is somewhat more than 40 years ago.

Hundmutter, your math's a bit off, by about 50 years...Teeth Smile

We were talking about Hitler's dog, Blondi, and things kind of um, diversified from there... I showed him with a reverse masked dog, in an old thread where I mentioned the Hobo dogs, then Apple got talking about Chuck's dogs, too.

Anyway, to get back on track, yes, Blondi certainly did NOT have the sort of dark pigment the GSD breed standard calls for. She was very washed out and had almost no mask.

I know you guys are talking dogs.... but you might as well just say "satan" when you are referring to "Hitler" and his dog.
I personally would not own a dog under ANY circumstances if I knew it had any connection in the least to one of the most devilish horrible humans to ever to live !

Yea all my dogs are Czech and DDR so maybe theres a connection in the lines somewhere, but I sure as heck wouldn't be proud of it.... sorry I couldn't resist not giving my two cents about that sorry devil

Blksable, you can't blame the dogs for who their master was. And any dog bred back in the 1930's or 40's is going to have just about nil effect on current German shepherds, even if someone COULD prove they were related to his dogs.

I totally understand your point, blksableworkingdogs.

Thanks Sunsilver, Lunastar(interesting info about sable)...good information about the breed in this thread. Despite Blondi being so 'famous', I really prefer the look of the dogs that many of you are breeding now, they are more beautiful(the working lines: west, east german and czech),from all three of these types. And some of the german show line dogs look very nice too but I've never been around them in real life to know their temperaments. I'm grateful to the germans for keeping/developing the breed and then those outside of germany who have kept it going so that we can still get good quality (in looks and temperament) dogs today.

Thanks Wolfeberg ! and Sunsilver I understand that.... not blaming the dogs.... I’m not an idiot..... but there truly is good in this world and there truly is evil in this world..... he is the epitome of evil and hate.... I couldn’t not chime in when his name was invoked over and over with no mention of the innocent MILLIONS who were barbarically murdered because of him.... I don’t want to get in a back and forth over this.... I’ve made my point..... LETS GO TRAIN DOGS 😬

Sunsilver & BlackSablewd - precisely. Its where my thoughts were running when I baulked at the 'diversification'. Nobody is as bad as I can be at going 'off topic' but I really didn't think this was the thred for it !

Hundmuter,
The quote I posted did not say that Baden's lines included Blondi, just some SS dogs.
Sunsilver,
I have always had a very hard time believing Eisenmann's dog were intellectually capable of what he claimed and suspected some type of trickery. But his basic tenet that dogs are capable of learning a lot more than we give them credit for or try to teach them seems valid. I try to intermix very specific obedience commands and timing for precise, accurate obedience for competition and also use certain phrases/sentences consistently and with repetition, my dog will understand what I am saying. But I don't think I could ever have him in a room of people and tell him to go up to the person wearing earrings and have him do it. And like people, some dogs are smarter than others.
