This is so true unfortunately in some circles. I have heard so many stories of people not allowing dogs to be dogs and have a say in what they can and can't tolerate.

Common sense and personal responsibility have gone the way of the dodo these days. Instead of learning about dogs and how to train and live with them, some people consider them to be either trinkets, toys, furniture or 'people in fur coats', and no longer respect them for living, breathing creatures with strong inherited behavioural traits that need to be understood by the owner/handler.

I think the rot set in once Joe Public decided it was OK for them to have the dog companion they had dreamed of as a child even though they were still busy young adults, working full time, and nobody would be with the dog the majority of the day, to look after it and train it. This devalued the dog. Then the idea crept in that particularly smaller dogs were great fashion accessories. IMO it has all snowballed from there, and a lot of commercial interests are guilty of promoting that view.

Loads of humans out there who believe they have a 'right', are entitled, to keep dogs; who actually should go nowhere near any canine.

No difference with children...

Dog owners and parents either await too much, overcharging dog or child,
or they think dog or child will function and develop on its own...

Very often I think normal common sense is gone, but why?
How is it possible we totally lost ( forgot/suppressed/ denied ? ) common sense and inherited instincts?

I guess (!) the main problem is

1. the development from country to township ( industrialisation ), from farmland to industry = no more real life contact to animals, no more learned knowledge by experience

2. TV and internet = from the moment we are not able to make our own experiences any more ( see pioint no1 ) we start to believe in Lassie, Rintintin, and others, Walt Disney for adults

3. Thanks to global comparison ( TV, internet, and commarcials (!) ) we want "the best" for our child or dog, but simply forgot that genetics always are involved.

I watch this trend for years now - dogs and children...depressing at best.

"no different with children" - sure, Susie, but at least children need to be raised by humans ! Preferably humans with some 'common sense', I'll grant you.

Dogs are expected to understand English or whatever language the owner uses and automatically understand when their owner tells them to "come over here", "stop that", "sit, sit, will you sit down", "get off of me", "what the hell are you doing on the sofa", or "give me that".  I have seen people come unglued when their dog growls because they allowed their kids to hug tightly, ride them like a horse, crawl on them, sit on them, bother them while they are eating.  Animal abuse and neglect are often seen as minor issues, not realizing the animal abuse is one of the signs of psychopathy.  I get so tired of hearing, "my dog can't be in pain, he is running and playing, wagging his tail".
