Hund, in my defense, I really wanted a sable. Cry Smile But every animal I have had as *MINE* so far has been black. It was bound to happen.

What a cutie Ruger!

Nice genetics and a skookum boy! (Skookum = solid, well-built, strong. From West Coast native origins, IIRC). Have fun, please provide updates on the beauty/beast pup. :)

He's adorable, and certainly has a strong pedigree behind him...though that's the oddest looking sable I've ever seen! LOL

Not trying to rain on your parade, but you should know that the solid blacks get even less love in the conformation ring than the sables--though that's primarily because it's harder to hide a conformation flaw on a solid-colored dog, since you don't have to color and pattern variations to break up the visual and camouflage the faults. OTOH, there have been a large number of black working line dogs that have earned V ratings, so there are definitely judges who are willing to put them up if they are well-made dogs.

Wishing you and Chaz1 many years of fun and happiness with this rascal.  The pup looks to have much substance.

1[Is this THE Chaz Reinhold? Are you two a thing? Guess I should look in the Off Topic once in a while...]

Hey, I admit I'm just jealous ! Maybe none of you will remember my mentioning this, but there was a brilliant young black dog at my ex employers pIace and I had to leave him behind when I retired !

Me too, Dawulf, I always wanted one of my own house-dogs to be a sable but that still ain't happened yet. (Black & Gold, Black & Red, paling B&G ...)

Happy Easter right back at ya Ruger, lovely 'card'. I hope everybody here who recently aquired an all black puppy has a terrific and successful time with every one of them.

Hexe, you speak the truth, as usual, but I think there is some hope. My Dolce, a solid black Capri/Boy von Zorra daughter (littermate to Hallix's pup you like so much) cleaned up at her youth shows and the judge was very vocal about what he liked about her structure. As a puppy, against black and reds, she went VP1. I think as more people are vocal about the decline in working structure, the judges are starting to reward more moderate, correct structure. Now, that ped was particularly chock full of V's, especially on her dam's side, but my only point is hope is not lost for Ruger's adorable black chunk. He has some strong blood behind him. There is no shame (for me, anyway) in a strong SG dog who works like a banshee and that boy oughta! :D

Jenni, totally agree about a strong SG dog that has everything else you could want--in fact, I usually find more dogs to my liking in the SG rings at the BSZS than in the VA & V dogs.

I do remember Dolce and how well she rated when she was being shown in the SV-style shows, and I expect she would be (was?) V rated if sufficiently titled & surveyed. Most likely would finish in UKC breed ring as well. Beautiful pup, even though my heart was stolen by Rory's beautiful coat in addition to their structure. 😉

Black GSDs have had a hard row to hoe for ages, in both the SV and AKC conformation venues...the breeder/trainer I apprenticed under told me more than once that if you came across a winning black dog, you could be sure it was going to be nearly flawless, otherwise it wouldn't be winning in the breed ring.
