Part of the problem I've found, when adding a puppy is that the older dog suddenly starts doing puppy stuff again! What's cute in a 10 week old is destructive when a 10 month old does it. But the pup DOES learn from the older dog. When working with an older dog, I always make sure that the puppies can see us working from their crates or runs or yard. I swear, they learn more from that than they do from their own individual sessions. Gettting another dog, age of the dog, etc. is a very personal decision. If you aren't sure how your dog will take to a puppy, see if you can babysit someone else's puppy. Or take your dog around pups to socialize them to puppies. I've never had a problem with a puppy not respecting an older dog, but definitely problems with the older dog beating up a puppy when they get tired of the antics. Obedience training is ALWAYS a must. For me, anyway. JDN - US

I find it is nice to have a trained dog and bring along a younger one that needs to be trained. There is nothing nicer than to share your life with two dogs of the same breed regardless of their age or sex. I had an ageing shepherd of 10 years when I made my first plunge to adopt a second dog. I will never regret it. My old dog livened up and took on the responsibility for the newcomer. And the new dog learned from the older one. When the old dog passed away, the newcomer and I could comfort one another. I agree that it becomes more complicated with a third dog. The amount of work for a second is not much more than for one dog but a third dog is a whole different story. You just don't have three arms and eyes at the back of your head.

That's so nice, Sunshine, that you're older dog took so nicely to the puppy. I recently put my last GS down (3/04 - age 14!) - she was a mean and vicious dog her whole life (not to her family, of course), so I never had the experience of two - that's why I'm being so cautious (probably overly so) about getting a 2nd one now.

a mean vicious dog her whole life??/ Really... wow 14 years of that?

Trust me when I tell you, it wasn't fun. She loved us fully and we loved her, so we put up it. Thankfully, as she got older she mellowed, but not so much as I would let her near a stranger.
