Hi All, i would love some help with this topic as im stummped.

My bitch has been bleeding for 22days. Her progestrone has risen a little then dropped a little over that time. She is currently sitting at 3.0nmols.

My male dog has sudden got interested and he wont leave her alone, they have mated and we have done an AI while waiting for a prodge result. prodge result came back at 2.0.

Can anyone shed some light ??

Thanks so much

I trust what the dogs say--they've managed to reliably procreate for eons without any help from a lab test.

Thank you!

I have tried him with 2 over bitches and he is not interested at all!

He is currently howling my house down and clawing doors to get to her!

But why would progestorone be so low??

Dogs are individuals, and lab tests use established ranges derived from the averages of other dogs when the test was developed. There are enough reasons as to why her pg is lower than it 'should' be to fill a full set of encyclopedias--her natural progesterone production may be lower than the average dog across the board to begin with; she could be hypothyroid and that's affecting the reproduction hormones; the test could have been faulty, the sample may have been compromised...

The male says she's ready, and if your bitch permits him to breed her, she's saying the time is right...so I'd be inclined to allow them to breed until she won't stand for him and/or he loses interest.

Had a 6 year old maiden bitch who started standing for her first mating on the 21st day, and continued to do so until the 25th day. She'd refused to stand for the male prior to the 21st day, and he wasn't really too interested in breeding her until that time, either--he'd court her and test her willingness, and when she'd rebuff him he would go back to just play-courting. Had folks tell us that we'd missed the window and weren't going to get pups.

She had a litter of 11, 63 days after the mating on day 23, strong and healthy babies and an easy whelping. I rely on the dogs.

Thank you for your assistance.

I am now going with the male.

The tests have been done at 2 different vets at 2 different labs. Hence being stumped with the results.

I will trust the boy as he is an experienced stud and i have seen him with other girls, last mating he wasn't interested in the bitch until her prog was over 70nmols so past ovulation.

Re testing prog in 2 days and i will see what comes of it. Hopefully a rise if not will wait and see if pups are born?

I have used a Progesterone Test a number of times...Haven't had much luck with them...I trust the Male Dog...
I've talked to vets about this too and they agree that the tests aren't so accurate...I would use the Progesterone Test as a Tool...ONLY a Tool...I would and do trust the Male Dog...
Just to tell you a story...I did a Progesterone Test on a female and according to the test she was ready...I bred her and no puppies... ... ...The next time she came into heat I did no Progesterone Test and let the Male tell when she was ready...She had puppies...

Thanks Bob.

Well i am very confused as male has mated her and AI completed and result was progestrone of 2.0nmols and then tested 4 days later and she is under 1.0nmol (so progestrone level dropped) i know i havent missed her as i have been testing from day 7 in season and spent a fortune on progestrone (i was going to use frozen semen but changed my mind as had no idea when to inseminate) so i have let the male have his way and who knows what is going on!

I guess i will wait it out. It doesnt make any sense to me but i guess we shall see...
