Amamzing how this community helped this poor dog. I think Ms. Yvonne Hecht, was the responsible party, identifying the tattoo number and dog. Apparrently a Zero means a dash (-). She used her Win Sis. Will Lissy be okay? Any story update on why the dog ran away? Does the owner need asistance if she is sick? The dog appears healthy and young for its age so she must still be cared for (I hope). Roger.

Apparently the owner has been contacted through the AKC information and is coming to pick her up this weekend. She had been left to be bred and ran away from the person arranging the breeding. What is Win Sis? Kristin at the shelter has expressed sincere appreciation for the wonderful response.

Absolutely correct, Roger, about Yvonne deserving kudos for getting the ball rolling. As GSD-USA is a private list, I didn't feel that it was appropriate to share her personal information on this public message board. The cat's out of the bag, now! I know that the shelter worker, Kristin, has thanked Yvonne personally. I just opened an email from the man who originally sold Lissy three years ago. He is kind enough to suggest bringing her back to Germany. I'll send him an update, as to what we know. Kristin will let us know if the American owner indeed picks her up this Saturday as agreed. All I can say is that if it were my bitch, entrusted to a stranger for breeding, lost, placed and returned to the shelter, I'd send a taxi for her. I personally wouldn't have entrusted a total stranger with my Zelda. Kristin is wise not to give out this guy's personal information.

Good for the German breeder!!! That's really nice.

There are a lot of German breeders that are caring. Can somebody share the e mail of that German breeder. He deserves to be commended to. Poor Lissy, it really bothered a lot of people. Why did the owner not pick her up fast? Was she upset? Crying? Why was her ear damaged? Why breed her at 8 years old? Ginabean, Win Sis is an extensive database program. Yvonne has a web site. I will ask permission to post her web site if you are interested. Roger.

Thanks Roger. The ear damage was apparently old, probably from a fight. those SchH3 girls can be pretty tough. The database program sounds great--and again more thanks to Yvonne. I think a lot of us have questions about the owner--If he doesn't want her I hope he will relinquish her to someone who does.

Kudos for everyone involved in helping this GSD. I was so happy to hear that the tattoo played a role in her identification. I tattoo all my pups not just because of the standard but with the hopes that it is a way to find them if lost, or identify them in just such a case as this. Great networking by all of you and hopefully a better deserved retirement for Lissy.

I will ask the very nice man who sold her if he would like to be contacted. His English appears to be limited. It wasn't the Zwinger Posthaltery Ahlen. Lissy was sold to a different German breeder, prior to her sale to the American. Yes, when the chips are down for one of us, we CAN come together as a community, putting our differences aside. As an aside, this is what I'm hoping for with the Indians, as they appear to be a very passionate culture. In light of this incident, does everyone tattoo and microchip each and every puppy, dog or other animal that they own? My 55 year old Amazon parrot is microchipped. You can get the microchip equipment and chips and get a discount if you buy 50 of them. The syringes are as big as a horse's leg, and I can't bear to do it, and ask Louise to do it for me, and it pains HER to do it. The problem that I have encountered is that the animal shelters, do not have, do not use, or do not know what to do with microchip information, as well as tattoos. Also, the shelter worker here in my area told me that they check for tattoos and microchips LAST, just prior to euthanization. In my search for a dog involved in an ugly divorce and possibly guarding a drug house, I was at the shelter as often as I could, always looking for Ami. When I queried if a tattooed animal is exempt from euthanization, they answered that it is not. "What would we do with the tattoo number?" she asked. Some dogs are tattooed on the belly, under a lot of fur, and at that point don't want to be rolled on their backs and shaved, IF the tattoo hasn't faded beyond recognition. I don't know how diligent workers are in locating a migrated microchip, either. Also, with a foreign dog, a different brand of microchip is used, and my reader won't detect it. I've already submitted his microchip number to AKC. I'm going to have to give him another one, for his own protection. Kristin went the extra mile. Lissy, up to this point is a lucky dog. Her future is unknown.

The owner sounds very suspicious. Escaped from the guy who was supposed to breed her?? At 8 years of age? Did they not go looking for her in all the shelters around?? I'm wondering if this person will come to pick her up. And if I hope they dont distortthe tatoo and throw her out (again) (Have heard horrible stories, makes me very suspicious) Please keep us updated.

by Kerry on 05 March 2004 - 21:03

Yes, Schaeferhund. It's difficult NOT to cast aspersions on a person's character when I hear things like this, but I don't know the guy. My guts talk to me, though. Kristin will tell us if he does indeed come for Lissy as agreed. I emailed the second German breeder and asked him if he would like to be contacted, ya or nein. I didn't know about altering a tattoo. I guess there's always one more thing to surprise me about people.
