Thanks for the interesting feedback from the little snippet of video without any context. So, now for some context.

Pup is about 4.5 months old, and teething, therefore I have not done any 'heavy-duty' tugging lately.   Just before vid was taken, I did some 'proper' flirt pole work with him, making him chase, target, grip and fight for the rag (albeit not making fight too strong for teething pups).   Normally I will 'reel up' the line when he gets the rag, then he will have to fight/pull to win it, but one cannot do that and hold the phone/camera at the same time.   Just prior to vid, he was doing all that, then when I let him win, he started the 'gathering' of the rag and humping it.   I found that curious, and consistent with other 'humping' behaviour he has shown previously.

Up to just a few weeks ago we had a 1 yr old female who used to play with Icon, and occasionally Icon would try to 'hump' her - full-blown, grab her hair along her back, and go through the motions humping like a mature dog would mate.   To me, this signified dominance behaviour in such a young pup, same as what I see with humping the rag.

Icon has moderate prey drive, which is developing as he gets older.   His food drive is high, which makes teaching him new things and training a breeze, that and his intelligence/capacity for learning.   I see possession drive and some dominance drive.   He wants to be the first into the kennel area, so I make Thor lie down a short distance from the gate when putting them both in at the same time, and bring Icon in first.   If I don't, then Icon will try to bite Thor when going into the kennel, and if I hold Icon back by the collar, then he makes a ruckus (screaming) as Thor goes by.

Here is a vid of Icon, made by the breeder for me:

So, now that you know a little bit more about this pup, do you see dominance or anything else besides what you already posted?   Thanks for posting, BTW.

Can't seem to embed you-tube vid, looked at tutorial to use embed code but it didn't work. Tips?

Not sure the humping is dominance but he looks like the pup most motivated to engage in the litter.

Valk,
Can you list any elements of bite mechanics. Your comments don’t make any sense in regard to bite mechanics. With a pup as young as Koots’, you use prey. You have to teach the dog how to fight before he is mature enough to fight. Since Koots is participating in IGP, grip is a big factor, but even police dogs fare much better learning bite mechanics through prey and then channeling into defense when the dog is older and back to prey to relieve the stress.

Thanks WR! The forum tutorial on how to embed youtube vids may need updating - I tried it that way with no success. Or maybe it's just me, lol.

Apple, there are dogs with minimal prey drive that will absolutely engage someone based on dominance, territoriality and the love of a fight.
My current puppy has minimal prey, I specifically asked for it, but, at 3 months will charge the fence boldly when he hears something on the other side. Is it fight drive? No, not at this age, but, his territorial instincts are kicking in and he will grow up with that elusive and genetic fight drive I want.

Koots, I picked up my puppy and drove 15 hours to get home, as soon as we walked in, he met my wife's puppy that was a week older and jumped on the side of neck and humped him, no growling, no biting, no playing.
He did the same with her adult females. This is an 8 week old, 11 pound puppy who boldly went into a strange home for the first time and showed this behavior...is it dominance? I think it was, I believe he wanted to show how he felt to the other dogs. He has not done it since with either female. They play together, eat together, but, he demands a certain level of respect as well. Could your puppy be the same way, sure, but, time will tell as well.

If a pup’s/ dog’s defense drive significantly overrides his prey drive, you clearly have to train with a different approach. Based on the pedigree of Koots’s pup, there should be plenty of prey drive to work with. I am not a fan of dog’s who have high defense and low prey. Not saying they are inferior, just not my preference.
