I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how someone could live with 6 dogs who were all that aggressive towards humans, and let them run loose as a pack. For some of the dogs could it have been a case of transferred aggression or is it possible that all six of these dogs would have acted in the same manner if they had been alone with the woman? (doesn't change the outcome, just curious)

and she is old, an elderly person with 6 aggressive dogs who may or may not be gsds and were deemed dangerous by her neighbours.

I spoke to family of the victim. The dogs that killed were a litter from a Shepherd / Lab / Pit mix dam and the father was unknown. The first responders arriving first at the scene were told by a neighbor that the dogs were Pit Bulls. They were not the victim's dogs but belonged to a neighbor.

It said in the article that the dogs were feral.

""She tried to get Peterson into the backyard but she only drew the attention of the feral dogs to herself""

I'll be the first to admit GSDs are far from perfect but most of these dog attack stories I've read are horribly inaccurate, they usually post a picture of a random, unrelated dog not even the same breed sometimes and an equally inaccurate written description of the dog(s).

In the rural areas down South, they have an over abundance of dogs that end up in shelters because some of the folks let their dogs run loose, and the dogs breed, and they really don't care about their animals.

I am not surprised that some dogs become feral, and a tragedy like this happens. Once again people are to blame.

Dogs are mirrors of their environment and the way they are raised and trained....or not.

Are you saying that German Shepherds have to be trained not to kill....or not?

Hired dog I know this can happen with any breed and thanks for pointing that out. My problem with this thread and the other thread posted by BlackMalinois is why he feels the need to post old news stories ONLY about the GSD breed. My conclusion on that is that another member posted the same type of story about the Malinois breed. I do not want this turning into a long drawn out tit for tat.

Falkosmom, thank you for clarifying the breed of these dogs, maybe now this thread can be put to bed?

Hired dog, I just wanted to give you an example of how the media can be wrong when stating an information, thus one cannot trust everything media writed without solid evidence.
About the breed: I know a GSD is not a " toy " dog, it can save a life or take a life, depending on genetics, upbringing and training.
My point was another: this is a pedigree database forum which means this site deals only with purebred dogs, not mixes or crosses. So one should post here only when one has a solid information about a good or bad dead a purebred dog has done.
It is not for me to find pictures of the dogs in the article, but for the OP to convince us with evidence these dogs were purebred GSD.
