I have a Facka granddaughter sired by Clif Vicona that I will eventually breed. She has all her health testing done, and I plan on getting her BH and IGP1 next year. I also plan on breeding one of my other girls to Clif Vicona next year. My dogs that I've bred also have Eqidius kennel in the mother line. You can look at my website www.glaurungkennel.com

I just wanted to follow up on this discussion, because I was reading another discussion where the admins were trying to remind us to be kind and educate rather than immediately put down or go negative.

I had Erik's semen collected today. 10 year old, virgin male.

From a five minute ejaculation period, he gave enough quality semen that the repo vet said it would be 2 possibly 3 frozen AI breedings worth.

Live breedings, or side by side AI would be no issue at all given his numbers.

So just ... if I'd let myself stop when I was told there was no/little hope for a 10 year old virgin, I wouldn't have found out that he's the exception to the rule.

Thank you to everybody who was positive and helped walk me through getting to this point with him. I sincerely appreciate it.

Hi RLHAR,

Your dog Dee Dee has the some of the same relatives as our boy Vicktor and his little sister "Halo"

I am trying to title Vicktor, so far he's got his BH....

So sorry to hear he has passed....

May I ask how old Dee Dee was when he passed.

Do you have some pictures of him!

Vicktors sire was a DM carrier, but his mom is not......

This is Vicktor's pedigree:

@Ryanhaus

He's a grandson of Halmi! DeeDee was from the same litter, her registered name was Hanni and she came over with Halmi. We talked with the importer quite a bit when making the decision of which puppy we were going to take and my husband met both when he went to pick up Hanni (DeeDee).

DeeDee's hips were good and she never took a bad step in her life, but she began to exhibit signs of DM around when she turned 10, so February of 2017. She was never in pain, never became incontinent but by Thanksgiving she had lost control of her hind legs to the point where, except for when we were loving on her, she was mentally depressed and that was when we made the decision to let her go. Up to that point she was one of the sweetest, level headed, best tempered dog I've ever known.

I had spayed DeeDee when she was 2, because I had made the decision not to investigate breeding her, for other reasons, and she was my partner on the Schutzhund field. Trying to trial an intact female is a nightmare.

RLHAR, very happy for you that Erik came through the surgery safely and is progressing well with in his recovery.

Even happier that Erik's vets were on board for collecting him, despite the naysayers, and that his semen is of good quality and sufficient quantity to offer you the opportunity to get some pups by him! Now you can take your time and look around for the right female to lease or buy, or perhaps someone with a bitch to your liking will approach you about wanting to use him on a co-breeding basis. Looking forward to seeing what turns up from this point forward, and to seeing updates on Erik's continued recovery.

Very sorry about your female DeeDee...having them decline physically while their mental abilities and awareness are still sharp is a hard path to tread, and more so when the physical issues lead to depression and loss of joy in life for them. Twelve years isn't long enough to have with them, we all know, but it is a respectable senior age for a GSD to achieve still.

Hello Hexe,

Thank you for the hopeful words about Erik! His DM test goes out today, which is the final piece of his health puzzle. I've seen cardiac mentioned on a few pedigrees, but I think I can make a case for the heart health of a 10 year old dog who underwent anesthesia 4 times ( the last one for at least 2 hours ) in 3 days without complications.

I also appreciate your condolences for DeeDee, she was a wonderful partner for my introduction to IPO as well as being a fantastic family dog. I realized I hadn't been clear in my initial response to RyanHouse so I need to clarify.

We put DeeDee down just before Thanksgiving of 2017. She was 10 years and 9 months.

Except for the DM and the degeneration of her use of her back end, she was in good physical shape. No allergies, no gastrointestinal issues in her life, strong heart, good eyes, good hips and elbows. If the DM hadn't depressed her mentally, she probably would have lived at least into her 11th year without any physical complications.

But she was a working dog through and through, and being unable to run, walk without aid or stumbling every second step, sit, etc just gradually crushed her quality of life until I could see in her eyes that we were keeping her with us for US, not for her benefit. It was the hardest decision to "call it" I've ever had to make in a lifetime of owning dogs, cats, horses. I desperately wanted that clear cut physical sign, but in the end it came from her eyes. Another dog with a more relaxed temperament probably could have gone 11 maybe 12 years.

Just as a follow up, until I can update his pedigree on this site.

Erik's DM test came back today and he is N/N completely clear.
