Better having one than not having one. My helper actually produces nice breakstick that are even bought by some very oldschool folks in Holland. If a Cop says out once, and the dog doesn't out, it's ground for a lawsuit, so I get it. Just use the breakstick and be done and over with it.

Great tool BM. Thanks for posting. Better if the dog is fully trained to out but great to have as a backup.

Responsible Pit owners carry a similar tool called a breaker bar.

You and me both. To me out is out too but we all know it's not going to happen, especially not in the US Where people are like "Police Dogs don't need no out." With the public going nuts whenever they see a dog choked off of anything this is the most subtle tool I know. It's basically like a pocket knife and very descrete. I bought one from my helper because I figured, if we'd ever have a problem at the shop it's better to have one on hand.

BE, THANK YOU for the product link. That is an awesome tool every dog owner should have. Even if your own dog is perfectly well behaved, you never know when out-of-control dog is going to come flying up and latch onto you or your dog.

Maybe someone should send one to that poor lady who got attacked.

Well, especially with one hand, she almost certainly wouldn't have been able to use it, would she ? Unless at the absolute first instance of the dog biting her while she was screened* by the trash bin; and just who is likely to take such an implement with them when taking out their rubbish ? We don't even know if she has a dog of her own. (Sheesh, have you been taking stupid juice today JR ?  Disappointing. Very.)

* Dog had obviously been taught to search & hold behind blinds ...if you are going to school a dog to investigate blinds & bite straightaway, you should equally be teaching the OUT properly. Period. Never mind breaksticks. Leave those to the dogfighters.

Sorry, Hexe. If I could delete the "old," I would. Tongue Smile

Thanks, JonRob for posting a link that works.

I actually didn't look at the woman's age. She looks like my grandma, so that's why I said "old woman." That probably makes it worse, though, huh? 😆

Reliya: "I actually didn't look at the woman's age. She looks like my grandma, so that's why I said "old woman." That probably makes it worse, though, huh?"

Not at all, I think it's very sweet.

Hundmutter: "Well, especially with one hand, she almost certainly wouldn't have been able to use it, would she ?"

If a dog is biting her (formerly) good arm, no. But the breaker device looks like it can be operated with one hand, so if a dog has her leg or the arm with an amputation, it looks like it could work.

"just who is likely to take such an implement with them when taking out their rubbish?"

After what happened to her she might just want to take it everywhere with her. It's a portable device with a lanyard hole and a pocket clip.

"We don't even know if she has a dog of her own."

Ummm . . . and this has what to do with this? I'm talking about protecting her, not a dog.

"(Sheesh, have you been taking stupid juice today JR ? Disappointing. Very.)"

Nothing stupid about trying to think of possible ways to help a woman who's been through such a terrible thing. Owning a tool like that might make her feel a little safer, and she has been severely emotionally traumatized. Or it might be an unpleasant reminder. It would be her decision.

Reliya if you want I can change your title. Can make it elder woman or just leave out the adj.

Hund I think the breakerbar would be for the officer.
