I don't know, my club sounds a lot like Susie's description. I think they're still out there.

at least 1 experienced helper ( the more, the better )
2 or 3 experienced handlers willing to support the other members
a training field with equipment
IPO training at least 3 times the week
show training at least once the week
understanding for the members, who "only" want to have fun with their dog, not interested in ribbons
some events during the year ( trials, shows, breed surveys, parties ..)
a nice club house
food and beer
and some oldtimers for the tell tales

I have been to a few clubs like this but they are few and far between from my location. One of the odd things i have seen is that when there are too many helpers, they tend to get into an ego war till there is an eventual blow out and a few leave. This is not a bad thing though, as those helpers tend to go to clubs that do not have any and now all benefit. Since our club is relatively small, two helpers seem to be best for us. this way each helper gets their dogs worked and the helpers don't start feeling 'bad' because "..everyone wants to work with someone else". The other pieces are hard for our club to achieve since we have to rent a training field, we can only meet twice a week as an actual club with full gear, but we make the best of if and have a lot of fun training. I like that you bring up "...understanding for the members, who "only" want to have fun with their dog,..", this is something that i need to work on. I tend to mainly focus my time with those that have the desire to compete.

For those of you who have been at this game for a while, have you noticed a 'natural tendency' in clubs to go through growth spurts and then shrink and then grow and shrink agian??? I have noticed this in my club and in clubs around us, we only have 4 in our state and one of them is 'supper exclusive' not wanting any new members really. Then you have the people with the attitude of "I just want to train my dog and not be involved"

I appriciate the boards feedback on this topic. I am always trying to figure out what i can do to make our club 'better' and still keep our vision statement in focus.
