| Is this normal? About a week ago I took my female to have her spayed. She was already close to going into heat (but not actually in heat yet) at the time of her surgery. The males had been trying to mount her when they were around her after the spay (I separated them obviously and only have them around her if I'm with them), and Max especially was acting slightly stupid over her. I don't leave Max alone with her, only Buck who has no desire to try anything after she about ripped his head off. She's eating normal, normal energy, and her usual affectionate self. I'm just curious if anyone else has noticed anything like this when getting your female spayed? Could it be because she was about to go in heat and the "smell" of the hormones was already there? I've noticed often times a few weeks before she goes in heat Max (before any heat) would sniff certain parts on her body and paws, and he wanted to breed even then. Thoughts? |

| I'm no expert, but I'd imagine she's still giving off pheromones. I know when you geld a horse, it takes about a month, month and a half for their testosterone levels to go down to "gelding mode" |

| I can offer no information on the OP question - but every Vet I've ever known has instructed to take a bitch for spaying IN BETWEEN seasons. Getting them done just before they are due 'In' might result with problems ? / maybe is the cause of this effect ? |

Of course she still has hormones! She always will..hormones are not only produced in the uterus and ovaries but also in thyroid and pituitary gland! After a spay she goes into artificially induced menopause. Right after spay hormones are getting flushed out and of course this attracts the male. Consider a period of approx. 3 months for her hormones to balance again. After this time males might still be attracted to her slightly, because she always will be a female, however she won't go in heat anymore, if both ovaries and uterus have been removed (there are different ways to spay), and she won't let any male breed her. |

| I have a similar experience only it is with a bitch who was spayed 4 years ago. My father's lab was spayed 4 years ago but there is something about her that drives my intact male stupid. My GSD bitch he lives with was spayed 3 years ago and he'll sniff her now and then but otherwise ignores her. But the lab he will NOT leave alone. We have to keep an eye on them because the lab gets tired of him after awhile and tries to rip his head off. |

| I would say it is more the blood smell than the pheromones, although she will still have the sex pheromones around for a month or 2 just like the males when they are neutered. When I worked for a vet he always told us to let the owner's of males freshly neutered that they would not see any immediate change until all their residual hormones worked their way through for several months. I'm sure it's the same for a female. Debby |

get a blood panel done now. he may smell something interesting and it might be an infection! this happened to one of my bitches.... |
