Rivalt Kennels

So this is the first time I'm posting Doberman ears and everything was going great, his ears are standing pretty nicely, but he hates the posting and keeps tearing them out. This is annoying to have to keep fixing them, but nothing really else, until today. The way he pulled the tape off he cut his ear a little. I'm sure the cut will heal fine(it's pretty small), but I'm wondering if anyone else ever had a tenacious dobe do this and will it affect his ears too much if I leave them unwrapped until the cut heals(I don't want him to make it worse since I know he will rip them off). I just don't want to have put all this work in to mess them up now.

Can you put a cone or something else on the dog that would keep him from doing this until the ears heal and stand by themselves?

I had one on him when he came back from the vet. He was OK with it for 3 weeks exactly, then he chewed it off. I never had a dog do that before. I may have to try a different posting method later, rather than the traditional post. Backer rod or molefoam. What I'm worried about is if I leave the ear down a day or two, will it be able to stand still. His other ear is actually standing fine right now.

Put the molefoam in, he seems to be ignoring it. I guess he just doesn't like the posts. His ear already looks better today, I left them down overnight, so I guess I'll find out if that makes a difference in the long run.

This is what happens when you try to cosmetically alter a dog, something that is now illegal in many countries.
Think twice (or four or five times) before you do this.

As Jill says, there are always some potential problems if we meddle with the physical conformation. When it is just done for 'fashion', (even the rather long-established fashion that is ear-cropping, from which the habit of making Dobes ears stand erect originates and which continues to be perpertrated on Pits and others wherever it hasn't been made illegal) we have to start asking ourselves whether the possibility of such injuries occurring while the dog is being asked to put up with things stuck in and all over its ears is really worth the candle.

Could be the OP should have been in less of a hurry to take off the Buster collar; anyway, the damage is done now. Its quite possible the injured ear, even if it heals without infection, will never be as upright as the other one, so there will be an odd & uneven look to the dog's head. For what purpose ???
This is one reason I'm unhappy with the efforts some in GSDs go to in order to make their dogs' ears stand, even tho its an erect eared breed naturally; if the genetics have triggered soft ears, maybe that is just how Nature meant it to be !

Speaking as a Brit, where there has always been much less interest in 'posting' Dobes & Danes ears, even among a population that reluctantly stopped cropping and tail-docking, I have always thought the natural ears far more attractive in those breeds.

probably a lot more info on more active Doberman forums.

My first breed was the Doberman. the whole experience of off to the vet at 3 days for tail crop, finding a vet that could actually do a show crop and not mess it up and then the astronomical prices they started charging and just the process of putting the dog through it, set me on the quest for a "wash and wear" dog.

ended up with the GSD and as Hund mentioned, I have seen plenty of them have to have ears posted (at least when I had ASL). Just another poor breeding practice.

"WASH AND WEAR DOG" lol, lol. that's funny!

Wash-and-wear dog - the end result of the dog shaking at the end of her bath.

Would like to see anyone try to bath and allow the dog to shake, while wearing a whole lot of tape etc in their ears ... hee hee hee.
