My brother in law is an immigrant from the Czech Republic. He still has a relative just outside Prague.

He is NOT into gsds or even dogs, but I suppose they will have friends in CR who likes and are into dogs in general, for sign of good health and good socialization.

My sister and he will be visiting Prague in a few months.

Can he and his relative help me get a great dog?

Is there a well known trading publication within the  CR for buying and selling gsds for locals? If you know, please provide.

I am thinking that may be a person who speaks the Czech language can help even if he is not into GSD's.

I heard that the CR may even have some great showlines, not just working line, but I don't mine a working line that looks rather nice, naturally good looking.

What could I get for 5-8 thousand USD? Can I get a young female IPO2 at least with excellent pedigree for this much?

Do you think prices for local sale might be less than targeted for international?

If your brother in law isn't in to GSD - then consider yourself screwed if you send him out to buy a quality GSD for you...  why you put your faith in in  a ametuer......Why would you ask a person that doesn't know anything about GSD to buy you a dog - just cause he is in the area........   you are setting yourself up for failure in my opinion......   You "suppose" he will have friends that are into dogs when he gets there?    ha ha ha............. This is humorous..............are you a freaking moron?

I do however have some property that is prime real estate that I will sell you real, real cheap...........trust me - even though you haven't been to the area - everyone wants this location.....I promise you cant go wrong................

hahahaha.

I've definately heard worse ideas.  I think something can be done, but you'll have to put a lot of thought into how you are going to pull it off.  I don't think anyone here will give you any genuine tips though.  That's how some here "make thier livin's", per say.  So even though there may be some great, fast and hard, tips to keep you form being totally screwed, I wouldn't expect folks here to help you with manuvering thier trade secrets.  Perhaps at the very least, someone can recommend a few good kennels and point you to a reputable contact in the area that they have dealt with before.

Why can't his relative in Prague not find a friend who is into dogs in general  plenty of time in advance? Best will be if he found a friend or get to know someone who is into GSDs. This is what I ask of them, but they may not eventually find such a friend of a friend.

There are two ways they can help I think.

First more basic is for me to get leads here and for them to present themsleves as locals and check the dog for good health and socialization.
Local contact among countrymen is always better and more revealling of any dishonesty, IMO.

Second more comprehesive is to for them to discuss the content of local sale publications with me and to seek leads locally. Why is this so impossible? He translates the content, much are abbreviations.  What is so complex about ads for GSDs? I'd like to know.

Someone who doesn't speak English well but knows the abbrevations can understand translated ads here in the USA, I believe, in reverse.

Just because you go to a country  - doesn't mean all that are there are GSD people...that seems kinda sterotypical to think that.......don't you think?

That is like coming to the USA - coming to a location and think that just becuase you are in a certain geographic area that everybody knows a "certain thing".........  Lousiana everybody can tap dance - CA - all the women are Blonde Beach Bunnies - NY - all the women are bitches - or all the men in NY are Italian..............  shall I go on?  I think not...........  He has already admitted that this person doesn't know anything about GSD - so ok - he finds somebody that "sells" GSD - oh my the are from the CZech.........little to say that this man will get a great deal - pick out the best dog - or to even trust the person selling the dog won't see a "sucker" coming........  still - I ask again - why would you ask this person to find me a dog for 5000 - 8000 dollars?

Oh I forgot - he is going to Prague and "He is from there" but he doesn't know anything about GSD - but maybe he has a buddy................

Again - I have some land I really want to sell..........I am from the USA in the south and everybody here is honest..............Not to mention I have a real sweet accent - so that must mean I am stupid!!!!....

I think your best bet would be to compile a list of well know, reputable breeders in the Czech Republic to visit, line up transportation for a dog from Czech back to the USA (hopefully it will be on the planes that you are flying in!) and then go to the Czech Republic with your brother-in-law as a translator and guide, visit the kennels, watch dogs be demonstrated for you, find a dog that you personally like and with your brother-in-law's help, discuss the price with the owner.

Do people in the Czech Republic haggle prices?  I know here in the USA it is usually frowned upon, but some countries it is expected to haggle price, if so you may get a really good price.

I bet you could get the dog you want and pay for all other expenses for your $8K price, probably even less, if you go in person.

This isn't that bad of an idea.  It would be best to speak here with someone well versed in Czech pedigree's to find a dog you would like.  Get a few prospects first and try talking to them or have a mentor speak on your behalf on the phone.  Then have the brother in law just go and pick up and bring back on same plane.  Not much different than what a lot of people do when looking for an overseas dog to import without flying out to the country.

Good luck and hope you find what you like.

You do understand that the dog might be on the other site of the country and when you arrive you find out the videos looked better than the dog. Then you have to haul ass North when only on Monday the seller has time. Then you find out the dog is not as sharp as you would like it to be. Then... you need to go someplace else and you find what you like but the cost is 4K and you have to ship the dog.. by the time you find the dog, find the sucker who will run around like a chicken with a head cut off to help you translate... Well I don;t know.. but let me know I have a good friend who will try the dogs out for you, he migh even drive you around..however, it will not be for free. Gas, time his skills... you are talking $500 bucks if he has to drive you all over the place to find you dog and that is just the beginning.

Nobody is in a hurry to bring their dogs to you... believe me. I can provide you with an experienced helper but you will pay him for his skills. Nobody will do this for free or beer.

Good luck on your quest.

I don't want to insult you, and I have no ax to grind because I don't sell puppies - but I still think this is a dumb idea, as in originally posted.
Best advice you could take is what Euroshepherd said, IMO.  Other points raised in what GSDPack and Nadeem wrote
- both also worth paying attention to.

What about a GSD are not revealed in a combination of:

1. Pedigree

2. Titles and scores

3. Video and Photos.

4. Other documented health issues not indicated on pedigree such as DM free

For these I do not need any agent provided that the seller is not outright lying or producing fake copies.

I can think of several

1. Health at time of sale

2. Degree of socialization with other dogs and  human beings

3. reproductive success

Would going thru a stranger agent  give more info?

Hogh Desert

not getting what you are asking.

My sources in Czech are reputable, good breeders, dog sellers. If a dog is crap they will return it to the seller and that is it. I have seen the same dogs in USA being sold by others and I felt for the new owner. If my people tell me they are crap, it means they are crap.

If the people in Czech screw each other over, why would you think they won't do it to you?

You need to know the paperwork, check it and make sure it is a correct paperwork. I have dealt with imports from Europe that had forged papers, wrong dog with the wrong paperwork..

And besides, you wont see the papers right away anyway, they have to be send off to transfer the ownership and you will be mostly gone by then! You will have to have the paperwork mailed to a Czech address, the club is not gonna waste the money to mail it to te US.

There are things you don't know. For the money 5-8K I can get you a freacking IPO3 male that has been to Nationals and you don't need to dink around. The thing is: who  do you know and trust who has the right dog for you. You don;t know anybody and if you let people know you have that much money to spend, you are an easy prey!

I would not even post this on PBD so people don;t know I am coming with this money and that is it, people read this and they will recognize you and they will take your money. You might end up with an unpapered male in USA for 8K and wonder what the hell happened!

Or you might get lucky, end up with a nice male it is 50-50 to go either way.
Believe me I know my people! LOL

If you are relying on a non-doggy relative, rather than someone as agent who is experienced with GSDs, how do you know they will be clued up enough to spot a health question at the time of the sale, or not miss something about the
dog's temperament because they are not used to 'reading' dogs ?

There will be someone who knows dogs in general. A dog's general health is not hard to observe. If a dog goes after a ball 10-15 times with gusto  it is healthy.

Most of the temperament is summarized in the title and scores,  with the noted exceptons which a person who know dogs in general can detect.

The point about not able to ID fake document is valid. This I have to approach very carefully. Thanks

I don't see much problem otherwise.

Both my sister and he are PhDs in science. Bright people. Reading ads and pedigree is not hard, nor is discussion with them.

"There will be someone who knows dogs in general. A dog's general health is not hard to observe. If a dog goes after a ball 10-15 times with gusto  it is healthy."

Sorry, but with that statement alone, you've revealed what little you actually know of dogs in general, and GSDs in particular.  In a breed that is affected--across the entire spectrum of bloodlines--with pancreatic insufficiency, heart defects and autoimmune disorders, watching a dog happily and energetically chase a ball for half an hour on a particular day is not going to reveal anything save for that the dog is having a good half an hour at that time on that day.  Injectable steroids such as dexamethasone can mask a plethora of ailments.

Did you happen to read the thread a few months' back from a board member who is EXTREMELY experienced in importing dogs from the Slavic countries, in which she related that she'd been sold not one, but several dogs, that were found to be dysplastic when x-rayed here in the US despite having been advertised as being certifed as HD clear? Documentation had been supplied that appeared to confirm that certification, yet ultimately it turned out that the board member had been the victim of fraud.

"Most of the temperament is summarized in the title and scores,  with the noted exceptons which a person who know dogs in general can detect."

The only thing that can be summarized in the titles and scores is possibly  the depth and quality of the dog's training...but anyone who's spent even a little time in the activity can tell you that sometimes the only thing a title or score tells you is that someone had enough capital to buy a title with respectable scores.

What is your purpose in buying a titled Czech import, anyway?  Hopefully, it's just for your own personal satisfaction...because this post, along with your post asking if all bitches in a household or kennel synchronize their estrus, illustrate that you are FAR from ready to dive into the Educated, Responsible Breeder pool.

As GSDPack has already noted, you clearly have your mind made up on this, so it's a waste of time to discuss this any further.  Good luck in your experiment.

No way, a dog's drive for ball or whatever is absolutely not an indication of good health, just an indication of a dog's drive and potential willingness to ignore who knows what just so they can get their ball.  Not too mention, a dog can be doped to hide pain/injury just like a horse.
My first GSD was a Czech import, she had mild HD in one hip and some major allergy issues that were often not obvious and she would fetch a ball a 100 times with gusto, ignoring any physical distress she may have had.

I have 3 Czech imports from GSDpack and she knows her stuff, and cares! Every dog that I bought with her help, came just how described. she a shinning example of what is right in this industry.
