And so, my qualifications: first and foremost, I am an osteopathic physician, also known as a DO. DOs are licensed physicians who, similar to MDs, can prescribe medication and perform surgery in all 50 states. DOs and MDs have similar training requiring four years of study in the basic and clinical sciences, and the successful completion of licensing exams. But DOs bring something extra to the practice of medicine. Osteopathic physicians practice a "whole person" approach, treating the entire person rather than just symptoms. Focusing on preventive health care, DOs help patients develop attitudes and lifestyles that don't just fight illness, but help prevent it, too.

I am also board-certified in family medicine and served as the chairman of the family medicine department at St. Alexius Medical Center for five years. I am trained in both traditional and natural medicine.

In addition, I was granted fellowship status by the American College of Nutrition (ACN) in October 2012. In order to obtain fellowship status with the ACN one must meet a minimum of four requirements. Those requirements include: (1) co-author five or more publications relevant to nutrition in referred medical or scientific journals, (2) demonstrate significant experience in patient care, (3) hold a doctoral degree from an institution that is accredited by the Regional Accrediting Organizations, and (4) maintain status with the ACN.

Unfortunately this thread has gone way off topic and hope that the dog in question will be OK.

Jillmissal: I am not naive enough that I think someone knows everything. Just because someone went to school for X many of years does not mean they are the be all end all of knowledge. Fortunately my vets will admit when they don't know or need to do more research. I also educate myself on the problem and there have been times that what I found out and we tried worked (sometimes to my vet's surprise). Like Prager, I take in all information and disseminate what I think will work best for my dog.

You sarcastically say, "never trust a word a veterinarian says" but then disparage Dr. Karen Becker (who is a vet). By mentioning Dr. Jean Dodds the way you did do I correctly understand that you disparage her also?

I'm afraid you look ridiculous when trying to defend the likes of Mercola and Becker, especially with their own self-written bios from their web sites. They are notorious frauds. What they do is ridiculous, manipulative, and dangerous. What a world we live in - a mere two generations after scientific advances expanded lifespans by many decades, a big chunk of people are ready to reject those advances, and science in general. Amazing.

(FYI Jean Dodds is not a vet. She does not have a license to practice. I'd warrant she's unable to get one and Becker is probably not far behind in losing hers.)

Of course no one knows everything, not even a doctor or a vet. But a veterinarian - a legitimate practicing and licensed veterinarian, not one performing quackery and online buffoonery to pad their own pocketbooks - knows more than you. They also have access to a lot more information than you do. You don't, actually, know what's best for your dog when it comes to medicine. You're guessing based on emotion, online reading, and your own ego. I say that knowing that I fall into that trap sometimes too.

Anyway, honestly I realize it's a waste of time arguing with the Dodds/Mercola/Becker acolytes and raw food/wellness/antivax advocates - beyond hopeless. It's sad to me that this sort of non-scientific advice is so pervasive especially when it misleads new dog owners or, worse, people worried about the health of their animals and willing to grasp at straws (which is of course what the Mercola people set out to do - manipulate people's emotions). For anyone on the fence about this - listen to your vet. If you don't like what they say, go see another vet.

Jillmissil, my vet has been called all kinds of names by Prager, and pragr has never met nor heard of my vet...simply because I have used my vet's statements to qualify statements I have made regarding my dogs' good health. Science only counts if pragr can manipulate it to suit his rhetoric...you can't get through the thickness with these kind of people.

Ok, I’ve had enough of Jillmissal’s tone about this subject from the start.

We are all allowed our opinion, and I respect all, but it’s the tone here that is irking. I want to vent this and then I will not post again because off topic.

I have been following Mercola’s posts for almost 20 years and Dr. Becker since 2008. And I am an osteopath myself.

Both, Mercola and Becker, are nothing but serious and accurate in their reporting.

They advocate a healthy lifestyle for man and animal.
All of their posts are footnoted with sources and are free. They are striving to give options and education to people looking for it, other than blindly following big Pharma.
Do they occasionally have some guests with beliefs that are a bit out there? Occasionally, yes, but why not. There is truth in a lot of things if you look for it. All truths start out with huge resistance until they become more mainstream.
What you do with the info is your business.

If you want to stick you head into the sand and follow big Pharma blindly, be my guest.

I am not an opponent of effective meds when needed, nor science that isn’t manipulated by the funder, nor good vets. I happen to have a great one that also learns all he can about alternative options.

Unfortunately, more and more vets no longer have freedom to practice medicine as they see fit, because the clinic they work for belongs to a big consortium, with big Pharma protocols for every little thing.

Go ahead and feed the garbage foods that some vets sell in their practice. Give the endless antibiotics and cortisone for every little thing, not do your own research...and watch how you will create dogs that need lots of vet care down the road, for a full circle business plan.

That ^^^ is very true. My vet, however, has owned his own clinic scince 1986 and after he sold that one a few years ago, he bought a building in his home town and turned it into a clinic...he is the only vet in the clinic and likes it that way. He answers to himself, not big pharma. In fact, he is very conservation in his practice and that is one thing difficult to find nowadays....he has been my veterinarian since 1985!

i have same feeling, seeing clinic, packet to the ceiling by bags with dog food.
usually i don't participate in topics where people arguing about dog food or flaunting how much they spend on healing dog's disease. that's somehow immediately draws in my head mr. Burns, his fingers and his "e-e-excellent"

This seems to be a geographic problem.

In my country ( and I guess it's the same in a lot of other countries, too ) most of our vets are working on ( and for ) their own, not depending on anything or anyone else, that said they are able to think on their own, willing to learn. Only in case very expensive equipment is needed they can't afford they will send us to a "clinic".
It's never wrong to be an "educated" dog owner, but honestly, although I did own dogs my whole life, I am no vet, so I tend to trust.

Is it that different in the States?

Susie, in the USA veterinarians make a lot of " extra" money doing selling for big companies like dog companies and pharmacuticals....same as doctors for humans in this country make a lot of money from " big pharma" pushing drugs for the companies.

Another reason I hold my vet in very high esteem is because he hates the companies pushing drugs and crap dog food. He does not even sell dog food.

That's not good -
but as always I am sure we wiĺl follow this development 😥
