Update:
For what it's worth, Auggie passed away on the 17th of January.
Acute renal failure/chronic renal failure/uremic poisoning.
Never complained, poor animal. He was a noble fellow and great companion to my daughter. I can honestly say that he had moments of pure joy romping and playing with my daughter. He lived a full, but short life. He was smart, gifted and strong, just blessed with a defective health disposition. Plain and simple.
John, you're right - you deserve an explanation.
Here it is: Thanks for your concerns, but I'm afraid that diet didn't kill Auggie, and Astro's CRF Oil isn't a curative measure for genetic predispositions. "American" German Shepherds, while beautiful, have some real inbred problems - brother, do I know this now. Guess I should have done my research better. I did just that in short order, finding all the problems with his multiple illnesses and premature death.
We bought a real "German" German Shepherd - an Alsatian named Inka -hips, health, long life potential. Vet bills? What vet bills?
Just one mans' opinion, nothing more. Don't take any of this too seriously, because if it was worth my time, I'd fly out there and settle it with you - as far as being a man is concerned. Just been a little too busy deploying to Iraq and getting out of the way of incoming rockets/shells, coming home to immediately dealing with a sick youngster (Tara) for eight months, and shelling out cash hand over fist for Auggies' care for the last three years.
Maybe we should just leave it at that. There's really nothing more to say, but let me finish by saying that Auggie isn't coming back, and neither is my $16,000.00 - spent buying, raising, training, feeding, caring, hospitalization expenses etc.
Believe me, this isn't worth pursuing. John, please respect our privacy and make no further contact. George

I'm the owner of Augustus von Laendler-Haus (Auggie), currently living in Hampstead, NC. Serving with the United States Navy. We bought Auggie around August 2004.
Don't know how the other owners of this brood are fairing, but thought
it would be a good idea to take the time to write down what's happened since purchasing this fellow from John J. Ihnotic in Valley Center, Ca. back in August 2004.
Had we had an inkling of what we were up against, I would have simply walked away. His health has been compromised since we brought him home. We have invested thousands and thousands of dollars training, feeding and caring for Auggie since he came to live with us. Much has been done trying to maintain him on a day-to-day basis.
The expense of health-related items taking care of Auggie has been staggering. Am finding it hard to believe that the breeder was oblivious to the defects in this brood. Wondering if any of you have had any similar problems you'd like to relate. This health history might not surprise you in the least.
Auggie has had a lengthy health history including panosteitis, dysplasia, OCD, and last year, diagnosis of chronic renal failure. As I write this, Auggie's BUN/Creatinine levels show that he likely will not survive a second bout, as he is hospitalized in an emergency vet clinic here in Wilmington, NC. His owner, Tara, my sixteen year old daughter, has trained him continuously since we obtained him. She is currently unaware of his tenuous situation, and we are not looking forward to breaking the news. Our thanks to John for this special assignment.
This is one remarkable animal, highly intelligent, well-trained and socialized, gentle and sweet. We are disturbed by the relatively poor overall health he has suffered with over the last three and one half years. I find it hard to believe that I'm the only owner who has had any significant problems with this lineage.
The likelihood of dispatching such a fine animal in such a short lifetime is nothing less than devastating to all of us.
If anyone cares to respond to this, it would be greatly appreciated. Not looking to hash back and forth or complain, just wanting to find out if this is an isolated situation, or commonplace with this lineage. Your comments?
Thanks, George
