If I am doing it correctly, I can trace my current GSD bloodlines back to this boy. |

Horand/Hektor isn't the 1st GS, only the 1st registered. If you look at his pedigree, you'll see his ancestors as well as other earlier ancestors of the breed were back-registered then in low numbers.
As to how does his color play in, Horand is not the only ancestor of the GS, and even if he was, it's possible he had other genes to throw black & tan from his ancestors (as well as white). |

This IS the very first GSD....he was the first dog to ever be registered as a GSD (note I only type that in English, Horand was of course registered as a Deutscher Schaferhunde which is the German name of our breed)

I wonder were the very very first GSD is.
But I wonder how Horrand produces black colors and saddle and eventually our infamous red and black.
