Ikon is a cutie!
I also have to say, that dog in the background really needs a pedicure. |

Duke definately needs his nails done... however it's the one issue that remains from his days as a feral dog. I can do most anything else to him, and can talk him to one nail occasionally... but to do a full sitdown pedicure is beyond his stress level. It will have to wait til the next Vet visit, and a shot to chill him, me to restrain him, a muzzle and a blindfold. He's come so far in everything else that I have hopes that slow and easy will eventually win him over.
(Duke was a rescue from running 2 years with a wild dog pack in the Waterbury Ct area. The rest of the pack had to be euthanized, but with major work here Duke is doing well... he also survived a rollover vehicle crash where he was thrown thru the rear window 18 months ago... he was lost mid winter in temps near zero and knee high snow for over 5 weeks til I finally was able to find him and get him back home. He wouldn't come to anyone else. )

OK my bad for not commenting sooner. I saw these yesterday and never came back to post, then when you posted under my thread I remembered lol....
Ikon is starting lose the puppy look. I love the one of him squinting his eyes closed. And his coat is super shiny. How much does he weigh now? He looks to be a good 50 pounds, though pictures can be deceiving.
I have to comment on the nail issue... I try to be a good mom and keep my dogs nails short, for my sake and theirs. And when you are able to start as puppies and make it a good experience and they get a favorite reward afterwards, sometimes you never have any issues. But sometimes dogs just HATE it. A pit bull I had many years ago, I had since she was 6 months old. Every time I cut her nails I had to have someone pin her down and sit on her. She knew better than to actually bite me but she would mouth me. And to make matters worse she would scream, and I mean scream bloody murder. It was awful. So there were times that her nails were dangerously long. She was the only dog I personally have owned who was like that.
I am a dog groomer at a PetSmart, and we often have dogs like Duke who just cannot have their nails done by us, since we do not offer services to (even mildly) sedated pets... Some dogs will panic so badly that they bite, scream, express their anal glands, urinate, poop...Of course once they start showing signs of stress like that, we have to stop the process, clean them up and send them off. But some will stress as soon as they walk through the door. Anyway, sorry to write so much. I just wanted you to know that Duke isn't the only one who loses his mind when it comes to the nails. Some dogs just can't handle it, and it takes a skilled professional (and sometimes drugs) to get it done safely- for the animal and the pet.
Have a great day!

Ikon is lovely. He looks like a real character.
My female isn't too keen on having her nails trimmed either, but what works well for us is that my husband will trim her nails whilst I hold a chew stick in my hand for her to gnaw on and because she is more focussed on her favourite chew, she doesn't take the slightest notice in having her nails trimmed then. It works well for us and makes it a positive experience for her as well then. |

When I first brought Duke home it was to evaluate and perhaps foster. We discovered that he's a pack dog, and does very well here, but isn't material for a "normal" home. I chose to keep him and continued to work with him over the past 2 years. He's lost that hunted panic look, and doesn't freak now... except for the nails. They also grow like a weed (wouldn't you know) and I've decided that it's not an isssue to press to that panic stage. Thus they get done a couple times a year by the Vet. I do keep working with him, and have gotten one or two done @ a time, which is a MAJOR kudo for him to tollerate. We are still working with him, and he's turned into a great dog, even socially accepts strangers now, and can be trusted to go hikeing off lead, which I hadn't dreamed of back when he came here. Just gotta pick my battles with him.
Ike checked in @ 47.5lbs @ 5 months. He's a lean mean fighting machine... LOL when he's not playing with his Lambieblu that is. His coat is quite shiny but was somewhat dry. I started adding the Blue Seal Natural 26 which I use for my adult dogs and in just a few days it lost the dry brittle texture. He now gets 3 cups of the Wolfcub 1cup of 26 @ night, and a cup of each in the AM. He scarfs it down in record time and never misses a meal. I absolutely crack up when I watch Animal Planet programs on the Animal cops... they give a stray food and it inhales and they state "That says it ALL.. this dog hasn't eaten in days, maybe weeks 'cause NO DOG eats like that unless they're starved!!".... They should come watch my crew. Of my 6 dogs 5 of them inhale their food EVERY DAY!! as well as the biscuits and pizza crusts here and there.

My girl Ansgar also HATES having her nails done. She will allow 1 nail to be clipped, that's it. She does not scream or get panicky, she'll just slip her paw away right at the moment of truth. Beckett's nails seem to stay pretty short, but he loves anything you do to him...he's a schmoozer, the more you do, the more he loves it! Kali as well, when it comes to nails, she lays on her back & moves herself around to allow you to get at all 4 paws. She looks totally goofy. Lil' Bit sits very seriously, holds up her paw & watches the whole thing, she looks like she's waiting to tell you what color she wants them painted...again, a big goof-ball.
Ikon is gorgeous! He's so nice & shiney, & his head looks very masculine. Very handsome boy, congratulations!

Ikon is so shiny he does not look dry. I had problems with nails also, so I went started using the dremmel. Both Jami and Sabin just lay there not minding at all.
Always,

What a hunk is right! Very handsome fellow. My girl hates to have her nails trimmed simply because I make her lie on her back between my legs (so I can see the nail better). Once I get her into position it's usally over quickly without any fuss. She even gets up and swaps ends so I can do the back ones too without any fuss. I quicked her one time, badly and all she did was look at me. No cry, no yanking her foot away, just stared at me as if to ask me if I know what I'm doing.

Regards Nails i never have trimmed up a Dogs nails i have owned in 60 years i guess them living outside they keep them trimmed down themselves,
I really am glad of that i would not want to try and cut Izzy Bitches nails if i did i think i would need a few rolls of bandage and plasters handy first to do a repair job on myself

Too funny Steve!
I have bruises all over me from wrestling with Echo on her "off" days. It gets easier each time as she now knows a treat is waiting when we are done. I have to trim her every 4 days to stay ahead due to her being an inside dog.

I can do any dog I've ever raised, or dogs from work that I've handled regularily... I have my very own "Doggie Full Nelson" that holds the dog securely without even having to use my hands. But With Duke it's taken so long to earn this much of his trust that I refuse to lose it over nails that while long aren't hurting him (my sofa, well that's another case...LOL). It's just not worth pushing him back to that point of fear where he would bite. I do what I can just that side of the panic... but that's it.
I did have one dog @ work who removed 90% of my Uniform pants with their back nails though... LOL. Fortunately I had a pair o' Jeans in the car.

Great Looking Pup!
Regarding trimming the nails, I only trimmed Sky's nails once when he was five months old. But afterwards I needed that no more.
I walk Sky daily and his nails are naturally trimmed during the walk or playing in the park. I am glad about this; saved me the touble of struggling with him.
