Eagle v Eichenluft video (32 replies)

My wonderful Eagle is getting older now - he's working on 12 - still doing quite well for his age and the fact that he is 25X Schh3 titled, and competed at Schh3 Nationals the last time at age 9. Never injured which is amazing in itself for such a big (and not so graceful) dog, he did come away from the sport with some "wear and tear" that is slowing him down a bit now - arthritis stemming from tendonitis in some of his toes; and two areas of arthritis which reduces the flexibility of his spine and affects his movement, though I don't think there is any pain involved with that. No health problems except age.
I thought I'd take the camera along for a couple of his daily walk/exercise "sessions" and make a video. Eagle had a lot of fans while he was involved in the sport of Schutzhund with me - and even those who didn't know him personally seemed to know who he was. So this video is for you, so you can see how Eagle is doing in his retired older quieter years.
Still pretty active, he plays with his daughter Nova in the yard, comes in to sleep during the day, has some exercise in the afternoons (chasing ball once or twice, long walks, swimming in my pool in season, and in a nearby indoor dog/horse "spa" in the winter) - and of course he lives in the house as he always has - the couch, multiple dog beds, or the cool tile floor his domain depending on his mood.
Once in a while I let him in with the sheep, which he truly loves. He has no herding training, but shows a natural "instinct" for tending - you can see this in the video. I regret I didn't realize this before he was too old to pursue herding/tending seriously with him. But instead his son Brix (HGH titled) took up that torch -
His side-kick is a tiny little chihuahua named Tigger - have you ever seen a herding chihuahua? You are about to LOL -
I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoy sharing it and my best friend Eagle with you.

He is an awesome dog Molly! You have done a wonderful job with him. Its obvious he is still young at heart. And still such a beautiful boy! I love how you did the video, with the old pictures in between shots. Its just a reminder of his awesome work, and MANY accomplishments. |

He is beautiful. I remember seeing pics of him when I was just researching the breed and have drooled over him since.

Great film Molly, Eagle is still hanging in there, the dwarf dutch shepherd was doing a great job with the herding also :))).
Always,

Wonderful video Molly, a great insight to a glorious old dog and his heyday. Brought tears to my eyes, they just don't live long enough and that is a great injustice when there are some people who live a sight too long!

| i had the pleasure to see MS. GRAF trial her dogs in alabama a few times....she's one sharp lady, and always had time to endure questions and comments about her performance and her dogs, there are very few as gracious as she is...it's always a pleasure to watch her handle her dogs.you've done an excellent job in the sport! |

Thank you! It is fun sharing my dogs with people who enjoy the breed and sport - and I'm very glad I decided to share Eagle's "old dog" video here.

Hi Molly,
he is aging gracefully! Time certainly goes by, since I still remember when we did show training together for the Sieger Show.
Give the old guy a hug from me! |
|
|
Thanks Chris, I will do that. He gets lots of hugs around here, though he doesn't really like to be hugged LOL still the dominant male - he gets them anyway!

| I have always been a fan of Eagle. He is an AWESOME dog. Thank you for sharing that video. I have a 12 1/2 year old who was my first competition obedience dog who although she really never loved showing she loved to train and when I am training one of my other two out in the yard she will bump them out of heel position to come in and try to work! She is a tough old girl. I am glad Eagle is enjoying his retirement years! |

|
| He is adorable. I love those old dogs. I think one of the keys is to keep them moving at his age; seems he does that quite well. Good luck with him, loved the video. |

| ...still looking good..i recall the great performance Eagle and you displayed at the HOT tournament in indy ..in 2004 i believe..the resemblance between Eagle and my female also sired by ALK vom Osterburg Quell..is amazing..nice hund |

Is that the dog that nailed a helper in the leg after his C routine and doing the transport to the judge, after the helper stepped on his foot?
Of course he was disqualified after that (the routine itself was SG, though), but if my dog did that I wouldn't be mad at him one bit at all - I'd smile and give him a beef marrow bone that evening. You step on my foot = you get bit.
If that's the dog I am thinking of, good dog.

No, that was Hawk v Eichenluft - indirectly related to Eagle and of course from my program too :) - yes he is a very good dog.

| i loved every darn thing about this video! what a wonderful dog he must be. and it is fun to see tigger all grown up and ready to take on the world! we just adopted our own wee beastie - finally. i love the brindle coat of tigger and that has stayed in my mind for so long. i found a little mix (brindle longcoat doxie and mystery dad) and we've had him for 7 days now. his name is mr. boscoe rags (the rags is a small tribute to rags of "crusader rabbit" fame). he has long legs (altho his sisters have short doxie legs) and his tail curls over like tiggers, so maybe daddy was a chi. i think he's a mini wild dog of africa. he and angus are great buddies already and claire tolerates him amazingly well. it's a treat to see her lift her leg about 12 inches off the ground with a 5 lb pest clamped on her leg. plus, the little bugger sleeps thru the night! anyway, eagle is a rather grand old man and i hope you have alot more time with him! |
