Cracked toe nail (7 replies)
|
|
| My dog cracked his toe nail up the middle. The large piece is slanted to the side and the quick is exposed. It quickly stopped bleeding after it happened but every time he bumps it, it will bleed a little. He's been licking it ALOT and its very sensitive. Its been a week since it first happened, its killing me not being able to work him. Any suggestions for faster healing, should I wrap it?
Thanks,
Melanie |

| yes I would Crazy glue it and wrap with vet wrap ,unless you can get away without the glue. If it was my dog,I'd probably go to the crazy glue like we do in people...relieves the pain since the movement is decreased. Dermabond would be better than crazy glue but I doubt you can get some.
good luck |

| When this happened to my dog my vet clipped it off above the crack. Just about the whole nail. It bled profusely and she had a thick bandage on that I had to remove the next day. Because it was pretty sore I took off the vet wrap and let her finish the job herself. She was fine after that but did lick her foot for about 2 weeks. The nail grew back but is now white... |

had this happen to my pup not long ago. She tried to climb the chair link in her run. I clipped it above the break and used EMT gel. This is great stuff and can be purchased online or at a medical supply store. It works great on people.

| Had this happen on one of our police dogs, he practically ripped it out. Took him to the vet and they surgicaly removed it. Healed quickly and back to work.
just a thought take him to your vet to see if they can do something with it or not. |

| Thanks everyone, I'm going to call the vet on Monday, he's not to happy with me messing with it, maybe they can sedate him for clipping it.

| Vet will probably put him out and cut it above the split. Since your dog is already out of commision you may as well have the rest of them clipped extra short as well. They will probably put him on antibiotics. Give him time off until it's less painfull. I have a dog that has real long nails at the quick, so even when I keep them short, he snags one every so often. My boyfriend had his Mal done at the vets like I described. Just like people who chew their nails, you can make the quick move back if you do this and keep up with the triming. |
