cont police dog needs help! (32 replies)
|
|
| A few weeks ago my husband was informed that Saxon was not to be re licensed as police dog and senior officers were to make a decision as to his future.
This was happening at the same time as Kye and we suspected that they were to put both Saxon and Kye down at the end of their service.
My husband stated his case and made representations on Saxons behalf offering him a retirement home with us as his family for the rest of his life.
We were as a family more than happy for this to happen, Saxon is not a danger, as anyone who knows him or has looked after him will testify.
We were and are prepared to sign any agreement as to liability issues with regards to him.
Today my husband was informed that Saxon is to be destroyed and the reason given as being ‘the responsible thing to do’
My husband is distraught and extremely upset this dog has meant so much to him over the years however as a serving officer cannot do anything about it due to the restrictions imposed on him by the service!
He has no voice,BUT I AND MY FAMILY DO
Therefore I want to make an appeal for Saxons life and I feel that the general public should be made aware of the facts, please help us to SAVE OUR SAXON.
The police use Usk vetenary surgery at usk for all the vetenary care for police dogs, surely they cannot nor any other vetenary surgey be asked to put down a perfectly healthy, fit and loyal dog just because it has come to the end of his service?
The Police management will argue that he is a dangerous dog, well that’s just nonsense, just ask all the handlers and kennel staff who look after him, all the officers who know and respect him, ask them who is the best Police dog in gwent? And guess who they will say.
I feel that the police management are treating this living animal with no regard whatsoever, like a disposable tool, he has had his use and now its time to get rid of him.
Is this the thanks that they give to a loyal and faithful servant?
Will they do the same to other dogs in the future?
How can anyone now donate dogs to the Police Service knowing that they will be destroyed at the end of their service.
The truth about Gwent Police dog section must be heard.
The Article that you wrote about Kye was given to you for the sole intention of saving his life.
If you had not published the article then Kye would be dead.
Ask the Police how many other dogs they have had killed.
The police have members of the public assigned to monitor the health safety and welfare of Police dogs, well where are they in this case and what are they doing, are they just puppets on the police’s strings?
Yes Saxon is the property of Gwent Police service that are answerable to the general public and police by consent.
Saxon belongs to the people of gwent who he has protected whilst we all sleep at night, who has caught criminals breaking into our homes, who has with my husband caught numerous car thieves who has faced armed and violent criminals alone, who has found missing children cleaning their faces, who has represented Gwent Police at Regional Police Dog Trials, who has taken part in open day events, the list goes on and on.….SO MUCH FOR A DANGEROUS DOG.
Saxons days are numbered he due to be put to sleep we need your help now, please help to save this wonderful dog.

I emailed the police at GWENT last night. Perhaps it's
time for local citizens in the UK to question the
people who are running their police departments. How
"clear in the head" are these people?
Such inhumane behavior and inexcusable, cowardly
decisions should not be rewarded with financially
secure employment.
So, this is how SOME police deal with their comrades-
in-arms; that is, the 4-legged ones. A perfect testi-
monial for a valiant and loyal companion. Execution!
They really should feel so proud... |

|
| WHY just send an email.
If it were me...I would contact the local news both televison and radio. Make it clear what they plan to do to this dog.
I don't know about the UK but here in the US we'd get a group of protestors and walk in front of the police department or the major office like city hall.
You need to make a big scene on this. Just sending an email won't get it people.
My mama always told me if you don't make a scene on something you stand for (and she meant a BIG scene) your efforts are lost.
Give it a try or those dogs maybe looking at sure death.

| Coinops,
I have sent the following email to the Gwent Police Authority. I hope these messages help, but sadly only too often I have known them to fail.
Please all send as many emails as you can. Perhaps if they are inundated enough they may think again.
Birdy has a point too, contact as many Newspapers and Television Stations as is possible, if you get enough publicity and public outcry Saxon's fate could be repreived.
All the very best

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
Today I read of the plight of SAXON a loyal Police Dog who has now reached retirement age. After years of hard work and dedicated service to GWENT Police Authority, Saxons efforts in upholding the law and protecting GWENTS public citizens and their premises, I have learned GWENTS PA reward to Saxon is the DEATH PENALTY.
No wonder the PA's across the country are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit suitable German Shepherds from reputable breeders and caring members of the public if this is the way you REWARD a faithful worker for his years of loyal service.
If the family of his Dog Handler are happy to keep the dog as a pet in their home then surely there can be no satisfactory reason why this cannot be allowed. A properly trained dog is a Safety Cushion, not a Loaded Gun. Dangerous is not the dogs attitude to humans but GWENT POLICE AUTHORITIES attitude towards the animal kingdom and the VALUE of LIFE.
RE-THINK YOUR STRATEGY NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE - SAVE SAXON FROM DESTRUCTION AND ALLOW HIM TO LIVE HIS LAST DAYS IN PEACEFUL RETIREMENT WITH A FAMILY WHO LOVE HIM.

Subject: 'the responsible thing to do' - I think NOT
Dear Sir/Madam,

This email is to lodge my utter disgust at the Gwent Police's proposed action regarding this animal.
If society were to rid loyal and faithful servants to slaughter because they no longer deemed an asset any longer, then society would be echoing Roman barbarity.
The hypocrisy of killing an animal under the deplorable excuse it's "the responsible thing to do" is utterly PATHETIC and I hope no vet will violate his/her oath as he/she will be as bad as those proposing the slaughter.
Had the animal savaged a child or killed an OAP or indeed a robber, then there would be a case for adopting the MAFF/Defra ideology which sickened the world in FMD 2001, that to kill healthy animals is "the responsible thing to do" if they are in the way, or of no perceived value or use. Healthy or not, 10 MILLION healthy animals were slaughtered in 2001 for no good reason.
Give Saxon to the people mentioned in the reference above, and cleanse your bent logic and have some humanity towards this brave dog.

| UPDATE:
Kennel report for the Gwent Police Authority animal welfare scheme
24th July 2006
The purpose of the visit was to see, discuss & put in place recommendations for Saxon, the German Shepherd dog, 5yrs of age.
Visit started at 09.30 a.m
Saxon was chilled out in his kennel at the time of our visit but we were assured that he has regular walks with the handlers he also has a large kennel & run all spotlessly clean & also access to a large compound for exercise, he is in good condition & very well looked after by the staff.
The subject of Saxon being put down was asked & we were told that no decision had been made with regards to this. We have asked for an independent assessment of the dog by a qualified person other than Police personnel & were granted that . When this is done we then want a meeting of all involved to discuss the dogs future. The visitors were happy at the outcome today & look forward in correct decisions in the future.
This visit was attended by, Mr E.Crouch, Mr D.Bayliss, Mr L.Morgan Visit finished at 11.30 a.m

| Many thanks for keeping us up to date on the fate of Saxon.
5 Years old - that's not a lot for a GSD. We had ours for 13 years (not an ex-police dog however).
Please keep fighting folks.
Thank goodness the Guardian are taking up the banner.
Best wishes

| ISSUED BY GWENT POLICE
SAXON - PRESS STATEMENT
A great deal of public interest has been shown in the future of the
police dog, Saxon, which has recently been withdrawn from operational
duties as a result of concerns about its temperament.
Saxon will be assessed tomorrow, Tuesday 8th August, by HM Prison
Service with a view to his working with them in the future.
Such a move would enable Saxon to continue to use training and skills
acquired as a police dog in a more closely controlled environment
where access to the general public is restricted. This would be a
positive outcome since our priority has always been to ensure the safety of the public.
Posted 7th August, 2006
COMMENT ON THE ABOVE PRESS STATEMENT
There has been no independent assessment of Saxon.
Saxon has NOT failed any required assessment by the Home Office
Saxon has 4 years excellent service with Gwent Police (human equivalent is 30 years)
Gwent Police have failed to adopt reasonable and responsible procedures regarding Saxon
There is no evidence that Saxon presents any danger to the Public, either now or in the last 4 years
The possible move of Saxon to H M Prison Service is premature considering all the above.
Gwent Police have clearly illustrated serious management failures in their Dog Section.
There should be a Public Enquiry into the Gwent Police Dog Section to determine if it is "FIT FOR
PURPOSE" and particularly its management of Police Dog Saxon.
Until such an enquiry is complete, and has reported, NO action should be taken with regard to Saxon.

Thank you for your enquiry to the Prison Service website that has been passed to me to respond.
I have deliberately delayed responding to you till today when I have had a report on the dog in question.
With us having over 750 dogs you can imagine that we get offered dogs from many different homes and backgrounds and therefore have to be careful on assessing the different offers to see if they would be suitable and safe for our work.
One of my trainers has been to look at the German Shepherd Dog Saxon to assess if he would be suitable for us to train and use as a prison patrol dog, the assessment normally would take into account the dogs physical condition, temperament and abilities as well as considering any legal or Health and Safety implications.
After the assessment of this dog my trainer has reported that Saxon is not suitable as a potential prison patrol dog and of no use to us, but as Saxon was under threat of being humanely destroyed I believe it was worth us looking at him to see if we could use him.
I am aware of the campaign in respect of Saxon but I am afraid I can not comment on police decisions, I strongly believe in what is said, in the article you quote, about the unconditional love or
bond between most handlers and their dogs, sometimes however decisions have to be made that consider other more down to earth matters which may or may not be the situation in this case.
Yours sincerely

SAXON - PRESS STATEMENT
Saxon was assessed by HM Prison Service earlier today who concluded that he is ‘not suitable as a potential prison patrol dog.’
Gwent Police will now review the situation and explore other options for Saxon’s future.
He is currently being cared for at police kennels alongside other police dogs receiving the same high standards of care and exercise.

| I dont really know what to say to this? Have just read all the info on Saxon and am deeply disturbed by what it shows? These people are supposed to be looking after our community? Looks to me like they are destroying all or any of the faith people have left for authority. What happens to a 2 legged officer when they reach retirement? Do they destroy them too? No of course ot, they get a healthy pension, (which no doubt sometimes they deserve), holidays in the sun? Afternoons in the garden with family? Why do things have to be so different if you have four legs and teeth of your own! I cant think of anything nicer than spending the days wth Mike and the guys. Good luck Saxon best wishes to Mike and family, Andrea x WSM |
