With the time change I,m lossing lite too quickly here, If i lay the track when I get home from work wait the required time and load up the dog and go to track it is dark. Will it hurt to wear a cap lite and let her track as long as I have the track well marked for my self?

You do that, too?

I was just bored one night and I put out a trail for a young dog I am training. I did it at night thinking it would force him to rely a bit more on his nose rather than looking mainly for visual cues.

It was either that or coon hunting.

I've often been accused of being in the dark while tracking.  LOL

You may want to look into getting a red light for your cap.  It has several advantages over traditional "white" light... red light will not interfere with night vision, either for you or your dog.  Also, red light will not attract bugs like a white light will.

I second what ScHBabe has said re the red light. Much better than the white one. Tracking in the dark is good fun. I normally do my tracks very early in the morning before day break as opposed to evening. It's only because I feel so shattered from work when I get home, I cant be doing with tracking!

Hey Bob,
I track in the dark all the time.  I can tell you that the dog doesn't care.  When I work nights, I will often do some tracks around 2 AM.  It is actually a nice time to track, there is dew on the ground and the ants aren't very active.  I carry a very bright flashlight and will use it while I track.  The light doesn't bother the dog at all.  I will turn the flashlight on as needed and then turn it off.

Hello Yvette,
How are you,Ben and the dogs doing?  The red light is a good idea, it will definitely save your night vidion.

Jim:

My concern was if the dog would tend to be bothered by the lite or even follow it. I,m just a woos when it comes to tracking thank god you don,t track at nite for a trial, unlike you who have to track bad guys any time.

Hey Bob,
I do some footstep style tracking with my dog just for training and with the hope I may compete with him in SchH trials in the future.  If I can't find someone to lay a track for me, I'm on my own to lay my training tracks.  I also like to add difficulties on the tracks such as "step offs".  It gives me an opportunity to read his body language and spot his loss of track indication.  Plus,   I  enjoy the cooler nights, it beats 90 + degree days wearing all of my gear.

The light was not an issue and didn't bother the dog.

any lighted areas near you,.. parks etc.  I will utilize these areas from time to time.  Also I will at time use a reflector or lighted marker in a low light areas.  Just have to be careful using markers o they don't clue the dog to corners etc put in a dummy marker or two..
