Just killing some time today. Sorry they are not the best pictures. He is definately just a pet and I just want to know his good or bad points. So tear him up, but be gentle. :) He is my loyal boy no matter what.

I think he is as long as a hotdog. He is tall and lean. He is recovering from mange and it used to be so much worse so no worries about his back half, and yes his tail always has a curl.

Conformation obviously is not his strong point & you seem to already recognize his flaws.

How old is he and what is his ped?. Looks young and maybe "crossed" lines, just guessing.....?

What I'd rather see to give my opinion about your dog would be action shots or even better video! That way we could see his temperament, drive and working ability because based on his appearance that is all he has going for him.  I'm not taking a cheap shot just wanted to let you know what I thought, remember you asked for it.

-edit: duh.... blonde moment, should have read the title of the topic......

I completely understand. He is all I have to work with and even then I know it almost seems a waste of breath to bother asking or care, he is no where near to "standard". To be perfectly honest he doesn't have much of a drive anyways. Hence he's just a pet.

He is infact crossed, mostly show lines though. And even then his pedigree isn't very impressive.( Even if he has Rin Tin Tins parents waybacksomwhere deep and unknown. Lmao!) Had I known better the time I got him I might have aimed a little higher.

Though I do look forward to getting another male within the next year or two to actually begin real work with.

He looks quite nice. But he looks more like a Dutch Shepherd than a German Shepherd Dog. Where did he come from? I love his coloring and his conformation is also nice. I'm a fan of straight backed Shepherd dogs. I hate how sloped back German Shepherds have become the norm. If you look at the original breed stanard it clearly says the German Shepherd should have a straight back. Kinda funny how now it says the back should be sloped. And also how GSDs now more hips problems since they started breeding more sloped backs into the breed.

And as far as I know the GSD should have a silghtly curved or sickle shaped tail. Which your dog has. Not many seem to have tails like that now, but I think it's still in the breed standard. I noticed your dog also has a longer muzzle than most GSDs do. I love the longer muzzle myself. My own pup has a more shorter box like muzzle. I have tons of  old GSD books with old black and white photos and your dog looks like one of the original dogs. Now a days the closest you can to the orginal GSD is the Dutch Shepherd or the Belgian Malinois. I have always wanted a purebred German Shepherd Dog much like your dog. Even the black coloring. They closest I could find to my ideal is my red sable puppy Sam. He started off almost all black but has turned to almost all red with black markings.

A good example of an original GSD would be one of the first in the breed:
  VA Hektor von Schwaben.

Don't write this little guy off quite so soon.  Give him chance to recover and fill out.

He looks like my Max,
Lean, black and all legs, my Kirschental male has a curl tail too, I don't mind.
I think he will look much better when his coat clears up and he puts on a little weight.
Go far enough back in time and you will see dogs of this type, they won't win in the show ring but I bet he can run like a deer.
Train him well and find his forte, wouldn't worry about his conformation as long as he functions well.

Max,

Moons.

His Pedigree:
http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/621130.html  There isn't much there until you get farther back. I bought him from a friend of a friend.

I personally love his straight back and the way his head is filling out. I am good friends with one of his half sisters who has a similar build. http://i37.tinypic.com/34q7frt.png

I kind of feel odd because he sticks out like a sore thumb and I have been being told he doesn't look like a "regular" GS. I never expected to have so  many people make a comment about his nose and tell me he looks more like a wolf. I'll have to try it again after her reachs a year or so.

Moons, if Lukas turns out anything like him I will have nothing to complain about. He is handsome. You are right though, with his long legs he takes them in strides while our smaller retriever is bookin' it around the backyard. I have no doubt he'd be a great tracker or even herder. He simply does not have the drive to bite onto any toys or tug.

Thanks. :)

I think he looks very sweet - he is still a baby and has a lot of growing to do yet. Don't listen to people who tell you he doesn't look like a "regular" GSD (whatever that is) - he looks the way they USED to look before people made them oversized, overangulated, etc.etc. If you have the time, go back and check out some of the archived pics here of the earliest dogs, and you will see what I mean.

He will eventually grow into those long legs - when our boy was 6 months old he had long legs and huge feet. He is 2 now and has filled out to the point where you just don't notice them any more.....

Have a happy life together!

I say look into his eyes and see his soul, his heart.  That is what makes a GSD what it is.  True blue loyalty and it sounds like you have that in Lucas.  Enjoy him and know that he will be there for you.

You also have to understand at nine months they are going throught their ugly period too.  Once he gets older and fills out he'll look really nice.

Oh I understand. I have never regretted picking him out ever, I was simply curious of what others thought of him so far. If there was anything blatantly sticking out that I might not have noticed. And I can get really tired of hearing people who know nothing of the breed actually make comments about him that arent so flattering. It gets tiresome, I'm pretty sure some of you understand. He is my first dog even and I plan on learning a lot befor I get my next one.

He is going to be beautiful, since you have the mange under control, the new coat that will grow in will show better. I get the same thing about Sabins nose,  no he is not a wolf cross because it is long. He does very good in tracking. I agree with the above, that your dog looks like the earlier shepherds.
Always,
Cee
