Hi Everybody,
I've taken a few new pics of Annie Oakley to post here...
In a couple of weeks it'll be a lot harder for me to post pics, as I'll be back to dial up, but I'll do what I can...

Closeup headshot I took earlier today while she was out on the porch. Such a kind, sweet, affectionate dog...Always right there with me. Have to sneak away just to get a good shot of her like this.

I am so blessed to share my life with this little GSD pup. I've had her exactly a week and a day now, and I can't imagine her not being here with us. She is every bit as special as I thought she'd be, and we're doing very well together.

To watch her, one would think she can see. And then she will run into the back of me if I stop, and I realize that she can't see at all. Just the same, she is every bit as capable as a sighted dog. Even when pouncing on a toy that she left laying in the grass or on the floor...She'll drop it, walk a few steps, turn around like she's looking at the toy, and pounce, never missing the goal. She's doing really good. Doors get her, though. She'll sometimes walk into a door, because she expects it to be open, and if it's not, then she bumps it gently. She's really quite good at getting around.
Doors get her because I try to keep bedroom doors closed, because she tends to be a bit looser about the housetraining if she gets into a bedroom...Don't quite understand that, but that's what happens. Plus, she adores stuffed animals, and my kids have a lot of those, so I have to keep her out of their rooms so she doesn't tear up their toys. I keep the living room, kitchen, dining room, etc free of toys so that she's not tempted, and when she does get something she's not supposed to, I tell her to get her baby,or her bone. She's figuring out what I mean, because I lead her to it and give it to her. I need to get her some Kongs, fill them up with goodies, and she won't care about the stuffed toys anymore. Next week, likely.
Her baby, by the way, is a little stuffed toy that Steph brought from home to leave with Oakley...She loves it very much. Don't know how much longer 'Baby" will last, but I'll have to get her another once it gets too far gone!
Thanks Raymond for the kind words. Though I haven't yet figured out what's so special about me for giving this particular girl a home. She's as good a dog as any other, and I just love her. I will love her always.

| Happy 4th to you too! We're leaving in a few minutes to go watch fireworks, but I want to say, I just love your Annie too! Thanks for giving us all a glimpse into her life with you. You are special, and don't forget it! You both are an inspiration of what one can do, instead of what one cannot do. Not everyone would have taken the chance. |

| I will tell you what is special about you You took upon yourself with no selfishness to look after a gsd that was at a disadvantage and would have otherwise wound up mistreated and abused and then dead! Others will slam me but God brought this dog into your life for a specific purpose and I say bravo to you ! There are others who are special here too but you did not hear me say that. Good one, Uglydog...I prefer to think of myself still as free, since I refuse to follow the path to dependence...So I'll be celebrating Independence Day!
Thanks, all of you. Oakley is a very special dog to me, and yes, she's growing so fast! She's at least an inch taller at the withers than she was when I brought her home. Her appetite is good, eating about 3.5 cups of puppy food per day...
Her coat is getting really shiny now, and she's just so good! I'm lucky to have her.

I know all about that, Uglydog...To do this fireworks display, we have to have not only auto insurance, tags, and driver's license, but also an ATF issued explosives user permit (which we have to have for our business anyway), and a $2,200 one day insurance policy, as well as permits from the city council, and the city fire department.
I see what is going on...Even though I wish to hell I didn't. Just the same, the ones most enslaved are the ones who refuse to see...As a Russian once told my Dad, "The only difference between my people and yours is mine know that they are slaves, yours have yet to find out."
So I'll enjoy the fourth and my beautiful little (okay, not so little) Oakley, I'll remember the words of a famous man..."Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God!! I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"
I am blessed because I am able to see the world as it is, not as some might wish it to be. Even so, I find that there is beauty in the simple things: puppies playing on freshly mown grass, kids playing in a sprinkler, weeding in the garden. I will remember this, and prepare myself and my family for whatever is to come. God will be with us, and I will have faith in that, along with the intelligence I have been given.

Ahhh, always good to see pics of Oakley! I think about her everyday. Hate to hear you are going back to dial up. That blows. I so enjoy finding your posts.

I am really interested in continuing to hear about her abilities on an ongoing basis - even if the photos might be difficult because of dial-up - please keep posting about her without the pictures if necessary - I'm completely fascinated!. :) |

I will continue to update on Oakley...A very kind poster here...Will post his username if it's okay with him...has graciously offered to post pics for me if I cannot get them to load after I go back to dial up...
It's weird how they will email, but it's hard to get them to load to a thread here..but I've never had really great luck...I'll take them in very low megapixels and see if I can get them to load, but if not, the gentleman that I mentioned above will kindly help.
I was away from town for about three and a half hours last night with the fireworks display we did. I had crated Oakley while I was gone, just for her safety, but she isn't fazed by loud noises, it seems, at all. She was perfectly relaxed when I got home, other than happy to hear me coming in, and wasn't nervous or scared at all. What a good dog!
On the other hand, I found something she is afraid of. When she caught a whiff of my neighbor's cat, she ran as fast as she could, the other way, barking and howling as loud as anything I've ever heard from her...I'd guess she had a bad experience with a cat, maybe when she was with her litter, or the people who bought her from her breeder. Regardless, she has no interest in investigating or attacking the cat. She just wants to get the hell away from it, as quick as she can.
That said, she's growing so fast...She's got a nice shiny coat now. Still can't get any real weight on her, but she's nice and healthy, so I'm not going to worry about the weight.
Had her looked at yesterday by my husband's uncle, who is a veterinarian, and he said she's nice and healthy, that she has a great personality, and that she's a great dog, especially compared with a few of the GSD's he's seen. He said she looks good.
I have a couple of new pics from yesterday, but my camera's still out in the truck...with all the fireworks video on it, too. Oakley had the above ears when I went to bed the night before last, but as of the morning of the fourth, has 'teepee' ears...Wonder what it'll be tomorrow!
I'll post those pics tomorrow, while I still have my wireless aircard. It's good that my hubby's going to be away working, because we need the money, but darn, I'm going to miss that high-speed internet!

Wonderful news that you will keep us all updated and someone has offered to help you download pics! Many of us are fascinated by little Annie Oakley...some of us are jealous that we didn't get the chance to adopt her, I being one!! I know that I love hearing how well she is doing and the strides she is making in developing into the adult, well mannered GSD we all strive for. Too bad about the kitty fear. I can only imagine how she got acquainted with cats and how that must have scarred her little soul. If you know anyone who has a dog friendly cat and carrier you might be able to help her overcome this fear. She may never like them but hopefully she may learn not to run screaming in fear. The vision I imagine of her running away just breaks my heart and leaves me to worry that she could seriously hurt herself by losing track of where she is and plowing into a solid object. I sure hope you can get her desensitized to cats. As always, good luck with her and keep us posted.

Now that I have identified cats as something she's afraid of, I'll start working with her on desensitzing her to it. This is the first she's ever shown of fear towards anything, and I don't like to see it, either...Plowing into something because she's running scared isn't what I want to see...
Actually the cat that she came in contact with, is fine around dogs...It was just the smell of him that sent her off...He would be a fine one to use for the desensitizing...He doesn't scratch, or snarl, or any of that stuff...Just need to put him on a leash so I can control his movements, and work with Oakley. I'd say her first interaction with a cat must have involved blundering into it because she'd never been around them before, and she got beat up for her trouble.
But Freak (the cat) would be a good one to help her overcome her fears.
Having never dealt with this level of fear toward a cat (or anything else, for that matter), I'll have to feel my way through it. Oakley has the disadvantage of not being able to see what the thing is she's afraid of, so as far as she knows, it's the biggest thing in the world.
Does anyone have suggestions? The way I will likely approach this is to have both cat and dog contained, the cat perhaps in a crate or something. Oakley will be on leash. I'll have one of her toys with me, and gradually work toward getting her nearer the cat, distracting her with the toy if she starts to tense up, but before she goes into flight mode. When she's calm, I'll reward her.
Or should I correct her if she reacts negatively, and reward her when she reacts positively? Being that she's blind, I don't know if a leash correction for negative reaction would the correct thing, or if it would only make things worse. It should be noted that while she does pay attention to my voice, she's not what I would call soft, meaning she's not skittish and clingy, terrified of making a mistake or hearing a loud voice. The only thing where I have ever encountered even the slightest bit of fear with her is when she caught the smell of the cat, from about five feet away.
Also, is a neutral spot a good one for the desensitizing, or does it matter? The bad experience with the cat didn't happen while I had her, and I'm sure it didn't happen with Steph, either, so it must have happened while she was with her first owners, or the breeder.
I'm just curious as to opinions on the best way to handle this.

I want to help her overcome this fear. Although it's not likely that we need to worry about it, the fact remains that fear can be hard to deal with, and it'll be easier for her, and me, if we deal with this while she's small and not overly big. |

Does Freak the cat purr? Oakley has her nose and ears to work with. Have someone else holding on to Freak. Have that person try to get Freak to purr and have Oaley on leash but maybe in your lap with a really tasty treat. You may end up with a wrestling match on your hands but that is how I would start. She feels safe with you and you can talk to her keeping your voice low, steady and comforting but give her only a verbal correction if she starts to panic. A soft but firm no, no, no and hug her to you while at the same time having Freak removed and as soon as Oakley calms down reward her. Take baby steps and back off if she shuts down or you feel she is overloaded. Wish I was there to help as I hate that some mean kitty must have slapped her with its claws. That had to come as quite a surprise. A lot of puppies have this happen but they can see the threat so they eventually get over it (most not all). That's my 2 cents worth! Good luck and let us know how it goes either with my suggestion or someone else's.

Freak does purr. He was rubbing on a car when we were down at the neighbor's house, and Oakley was sniffing the ground...Lifted her nose straight toward the cat, sniffed somemore, then panic set in and she streaked off. Once she was good and clear of that cat, she was back to normal...It didn't leave her shook up at all. Just being near it bothered her.
Interesting note: She followed the cat's trail on numerous occasions, where he's crossed our yard, all that, and no reaction. The only time she reacted was when she picked up the direct scent of the cat, along with his sound??? maybe.
I will be working with her to help her overcome this fear, since I want her to be able to face the world without worry. And of course, I'll keep all updated here.

Okay...Here goes...
Funny note: Every time I try to type the word Okay (I just did it again), I type "Oaky" first, and sometimes half a dozen times before I get it right!!! LOL!
Anyway, last night we had thunder and lightning, heavy rain and lots of wild stuff going on, first time since Oakley came home that we've had anything besides sun and breeze. It didn't bother her a bit. She was quiet in her crate all night, except for when she was playing with her baby and a bone, and rattling the cage pretty good when she tossed them over her shoulder! Pretty funny stuff, the way this pup plays with her toys.
She's really doing the housebreaking thing pretty well, as long as I can keep her out of my oldest daughter's bedroom...She seems to think that's an okay potty spot, for some reason...I have to keep the door shut.
Our other dog is scheduled for a spay next Monday, and so Oakley will have to take it easy on her for a couple of days, but then, it'll be okay.
She knows the whole area around here now. She's not so clingy, much more confident, but still stays fairly close. She eats completely on her own, and it's funny, at feeding times, she goes and sits in front of the washer, staring at the wall, waiting for me to come fill her dish for her. She always sits, though Stay is proving to be more of a challenge that with a sighted dog, which I expected, since dogs can tend to not be very reliable if they can't see the owner, and she can't see me even when I'm standing there. We'll figure it out, though. Just takes a bit of trial and error.

Great pics! Good to hear the storms don't bother her. I wonder if you can't make a noise that lets her know where you are when working on the down, you know like the ball in blind baseball beeps constantly so the sight impaired can keep track of it. Maybe we need to put a beeper on you!

Look how she is using those ears! And what ears I might add! Just wait until they are up solid and she can swivel them like the radar dishes they resemble. I notice she really strides out confidently in her play. You really can't tell that she is blind. Awesome pics.

I am in an area where I could not get DSL or cable internet. I almost gave up and went to HughesNet. The satelite sales lady was the one that actually suggested that I look into mobile broadband. We are just within reach of a cell tower and have been pretty happy with it.. It is not affected by weather, and the 5gig download cap has only been problematic when the kids and I have watched hours of youtube videos. A little bit pricy ($60/month), but way better than dial up. It's mobile and if you don't need telephone service to make it work. Just a thought.

Off Topic...
RFS is right, Luvdemdogs...I'm on a mobile broadband card from Verizon Wireless...for now. It's actually for my hubby's laptop for when he's out of town, and he's getting ready to leave, so I'll be back on dial up...The card was free, with a two year agreement, and even with all the pic posting I've done, I've not even used 2 gigs of the available 5 gigs...But watch out if you go over that...They hit you with a .25 per MB overage fee, and it could get steep...The nice thing is you can check your usage.
I think when my hubby starts getting paid on this job, and I get everything caught up, I'll look into getting WildBlue...it's $49.95 per month, has a 7.5 gig limit, and while not as fast as the mobile Broadband...Won't tie up my phone. I like the broadband, but with a two year commitment on either one, the $50 per month is easier to handle than the 60.

Oakley looks great and is getting so big! Your doing a great job with her!
Deb had some really good ideas as far as the cat goes.
I would not give a correction for fear though.
If you need any other help in posting pics I'll be glad to help also.
Anyone would thing that Oakley had no disadvantage at all by the pics....frolicking with the others the way she does she looks great.
And, she has very nice eyes. Just wondering.....I, you and everyone else knows when you look into your dogs eyes and they look back at you, what you see and feel because of how they're looking back at you....so I'm just wondering, when you speak to Oakley and she looks at you because your talking to her do you see that in her eyes too? Know what I mean?
Because, for me, sometimes I can read my dog by looking at her eyes, they have alot of expression. Is it the same with Oakley I wonder because she doesn't use them like other dogs.

Yes, when you look into Oakley's eyes, you can read her...She can't see, but she is still very expressive. She looks at me when I talk to her, and her eyes are searching, even though she gets her info from her ears and eyes. It's awesome.
And the fireworks display was cool...I got some digital footage, but I don't know if I can send it or not...It's pretty large...490 MB.
I put the pic of the two laying together with the ball on my desktop...That's the pic I see when I start my computer! The pic where I focused on her eyes...I love that one.
I have spent a lot of time on this thread today..Palerider is up to his usual filthy tricks again, and really ruining the board, along with the other dramas...People complained about the political threads, but I prefer those to the filthy stuff on here now.
I'll keep adding pics as I can, but I'm starting a new thread tomorrow, because this one's getting too hard to see for those on dial up, so I'll keep future ones shorter, and add new pics only once or twice before I start new ones. That way, they'll be easier to see.

Crys, this whole thing with you and Oakley just firms up a belief I have always had. We do not pick our dogs, the Lord picks them for us based on theirs and our needs. When I picked (she picked me) my working line female, I could have sworn I had brought home the devil. She was into everything, high drive on everything she did, run and jump into the recliner, tipping it over,, just everything. I know if it had been anyone else who had got that dog, they would have relagated her to the back yard on a chain for the rest of her life or in a shelter. But patience and love tamed her, she settled down by 6 months and now is the perfect obedience dog, and into Sch training and tracking.
In your case, you came along when Oakley needed you and only you and your family had hearts large enough to overcome her issues. It was the Lord's intervention that we help his creations, as they help us.
To all who read this, think of situations like this, or when you picked a puppy that you know would have had a bad life if it hadn't been for you and you will understand.

I am finally back in God's country...wow, what a week of driving to Michigan and back. The night before I left, my 7 yr old male GSD had gastric torsion surgery and huge bloat, I almost lost him, I was at the vet till 11pm - 4am, he still hadn't woken up much, then we left Saturday evening taking him with us...he is doing better but still not eating well, have to switch him to a RAW diet...darn it was close...
I love the new photos of Oakley, I sure miss her...and I thank Crys for adopting her or I would have kept her for myself, but then I would have had to cut back on all the other rescues...so had to do what was best...darn...I am jealous and happy for Crys at the same time...OAKLEY was and IS a VERY SPECIAL PUP....
Anyhow, you had a chance at adopting her DebiSue...LOL...anyone could have filled out an application...(grin)
No bad cat experiences here...she walked right up to my barn cats, actually chased them when they took off, maybe another smell she didn't recognize around there??? My cats like puppies, just not the BIG GSD's...no problem or anything. They rubbed on her and she was fine...if you need pics uploaded Crys, just send them my way and I will post for ya...
It is tough catching up after 10 days gone, but it was awesome not having cell phone or email service....

Glad you're back on line! Missed ya even if you came back just to give me a hard time and rub it in that I don't have Oakley! I thought seriously about it but if I remember correctly you said I was too far away. Actually, I wouldn't have minded the trip but have no vacation time left after my surgery and even if I did, I don't know that my car would have made it. Just lucky it's getting me back and forth to work. And, my husband would have divorced me if I brought another puppy home. It's OK though, you gave her to a great home and Crys is sweet enough to keep us all updated on Oakley's progress.

I was hoping that I could convince EVERYONE that they wouldn't work out, Crys was just too persistant...I guess the sqweaky wheel gets the oil....see, I really wanted to keep her myself and then it would give me an excuse to cut back on the rescue dogs...the more I had her here, the more I wanted her, it is a good thing Crys persisted as much as she did, so I didn't have her too long, or she wouldn't have went anywhere..!!!!!!
Besides she is now close enough that I can go over and see her...I go to the Spokane area often to pick up dogs there...sorry....I wouldn't want to be the cauxe of your divorce either...
