If you are tattooing the pups/dogs yourself, you can use anything you want. I don't register litters with UScA anymore, so I am not bound by their format. This is what I use these days.

  • 1st two digits: FG (Frauengarten)
  • 3rd and 4th digits 08 (2008)
  • 5th digit D (litter letter)
  • 6th digit = numerical order of each puppy's name alphabetically, males first

Example: FG07D1 = Frauengarten litter, born in '07, D litter, 1st male name alphabetically

I put the tattoo and microchip numbers on the pups' individual AKC reg. applications, check the "pet recovery" box (for the additional $12.) Even if an unregistered dog from my kennel (owners fail to register for some reason) if it is reported to the AKC database any time in future, they do a broad search on the tattoo and micro-chip number, and when they find another, similar number (series?) they will contact me. They also keep a database on every dog reported "found" by any entity, in case someone looks for a dog that doesn't match up with anything after a broad search, or enters data for a dog after the inquiry, even if they $12. fee has not been tendered and the dog is never entered in the program. Nice to know we're getting something for our AKC reg. fees these days.

Hope this helps.

SS

If you live anywhere near me, I'd be happy to tattoo your pups for you. No longer an "official" USA tattoower or breed warden, "defrocked" because I no longer belong to a local USA club, but I still have a tattoo kit.

Good luck! SS

Interesting.  So what happens if another dog has the same tat #,  from a different kennel.  Say "Friggin Great", born in 07 , D litter, first pup??   FG07d1.    Thanks

Mine is simpler

K for Kerschberger

O for O litter

01, 02, 03 etc males first

so, KO01

IF i make it around the´alphabet, being I am going real slow,  I can go 001, 002 etc

The AKC reg is then  connected by the last 2 digits of the tattoo ex: DN21014501 etc would be  KO01

Microchip can not be connected but I do them and try to register them as well to their AKC registration

I use a cheap $30 tattoo set which works better than the $300 German one I shelved here...

called SMALL ANIMAL TATTOO OUTFIT WITH RELEASE  MADE BY STONE  FROM KANSAS  STONEMFG.com  product nr 2745

i use the german green ink though - where ever i bought it online, the company also carried the green ink.
