I have been doing some reading on the net about canine herpies.  I'm not getting the answers I have been looking for. How its spread, I know it can be spread in breeding but can it be spread in other ways???

I found this article very informational.  Good luck.  I had a Corgi with Canine Herpies.  If you have any questions you can PM me.

Had a female contract it while she was in the last stages of whelp.  She started bleeding about a week before the pups were born.  We didn't know she had canine herpes at the time.  Pups were born with out problem and had a normal life for about 10 days when suddenly they started dying a horrible death.  (C-section wouldn't have helped as it is contracted through the mother in whelp.  If it had been earlier she would have reabsorbed the pups and I wouldn't have thought anything of it, or if it was even earlier she may not have gotten pregnant.  Subsequent pregnancies probably would have been okay because she would have developed the antibodies to pass to the pups.... but then they all would have been carriers) I can't tell you how horrible it was to watch them die one by one over a weeks time.  One pup survived out of 8.  If I had had an incubator where I could have kept the temperature about 93 degrees for a week or so, I could have saved them.... then their normal body would have maintained their own body temperature.  I tried all I could.  It is a short lived virus... less than 24 hours... sunshine kills..... can be passed from dog to dog in saliva, air, licking....... my girl got it when I took her for her koer for life.... from the sleeve.  She would have been okay had she not been pregnant.  It can recur just like a cold sore when dog is under stress, but most would not know it.... dog would be off their food for maybe a day and then be okay..... in the mean time they can infect others.

I had all of my other dogs tested by sending in blood samples.... the others were all negative.  I isolated my girl, had her spay and placed her with a family.  She was the end of my original line.... her pup was also a carrier and I placed her in a home.  In europe, they give shots for it.... many dogs we bring over can be carriers because they have been given the shot.  I was told at the time that there was a shot for it, but it wasn't profitable here in the states..... but like I said, it is one of the shots offered in Germany.

My poor next girl could hardly take care of her pups...... I kept the temperature in the whelping room so high..... Have not had any problems sense, thank goodness!!!
