Crazy shedding, what do you do? (16 replies)

What do you guys do about your dogs shedding in your house? Our dogs live in our basement when they aren't outside, but I have two Sibes, and two German Shepherds. My male Husky, and female GSD are both starting to shed, the Shepherd doesn't do it much, but the Husky sheds like crazy when he blows his coat. The picture below was just part of what I swept up....and after brushing him later I could have had a pile 6 times that big.
If any older person needs a wig let me know

Brush and more brush, sweep, vacuum, and more brush. I do brush them outside but when they blow their coats all bets are off. |

Get a Furminator and use it twice a week. |

Yep, Furminator. I recommend the Professional series, medium size. Expensive but well worth it. |

All of the above, you can't stop the dog's from shedding. |

AND get a Royal vacuum cleaner -- they have all metal parts and are very sturdy. The vacuum cleaner dealer we got ours from told me that vacuuming dog hair is a heavy duty job for a vacuum (he called it "abuse"). Also helps to have a sense of humor! Our boy, Radar, was at U Ga for spinal surgery in May -- doing well now -- when he was gone I sure missed all the dog hair! |

GSDguy,
I use a Metro Air-Force dryer. You can use it on them when they are dry, but I recommend using it outside.. The loose hair, dirt and dander blow everywhere. Once they start to shed, I love it, cause it all comes out.
It also works great when they are wet, before bringing them inside. I keep one on my porch and my dogs fight and push each other out of the way to be next. It leaves the water, dirt, dander and hair OUTSIDE..
My Mom also uses it to keep the porch clean and I use it in the garage as a blower..
I presonally have a Furminator, but it tends to cut the hair that is supposed to stay in, and I dont like that.

Good luck.

When people ask my husband, "what type of dog do you have," he usually replies, "a German Shedder" -- unless Radar has been particularly naughty of late, then the response is, "a German Shredder." I have observed that the more you love a dog, the more it seems to shed . . . . . . |

Get a double pin rake, better than a furminator. |

We brush our gsd's regularly using a brush that is similar to the furminator that we bought from walmart, it was also much cheaper. Also having a dyson animal vaccuum helps. It may have been expensive but it was a great investment and we haven't regretted buying one. |

Arrakis I actually have one of those rakes, which was what I started using.....but as you guys know, it's ridiculous still lol. Thanks you guys, I'll look into what you guys suggested. |

Furminators are okay but brushing takes a lot of time!! Power dryers are the way to go. |

Dyson Animal vacum cleaner, brush every day, and tell people to avoid my house if they don't like dog hair, lose what is left of my mind, (I love that commercial where the newfoundland comes into the white living room, shakes and all kinds of small black dogs go running off in different directions).
My parents received their Christmas gift a few years back, keep in mind this gift was packaged at the store, and called me to say now they know the dogs love them since the package had dog hair in it! |

This may sound crazy to most but why not recycle the hair instead of throw it away?If you live near a park or woods or if their is an open area with just a few trees.Do nature a favour and take the hair there.Birds will utilize it etc. When I groom my dogs I just leave the hair there and soon after it disapears. There is no way to stop shedding haha.Maybe someone should merchandise a pillow filled with the hair? Just kidding. |
