If anyone is feeding Nutro take your dog (s) off immediately.  2 of my puppies were recently poisoned and killed by this product.

I am currently communicating with Nutro.  If you look on consumer affairs you will see hundreds of complaints (RECENTLY)  Dogs are getting very sick and young and older animals are dying.

Symptoms are vomitting, diarrhea, lethargy.  Took my pups to the vet immediately and we could not figure out what was wrong with them.  We put them on supportive care but they did not make it.  The day I switched to Nutro they got sick.  Mother Dog also got sick but symptoms were not as severe.  Then the other pups got sick and I received a call from a friend breeder at midnight.  He has told me about the recent complaints.  I immediately took the dogs off Nutro and their symptoms disappeared.

Nutro does not feel that they have to pull this product off the shelf right now even though it killed dogs before.  They said they would have to investigate the hundreds of complaints they are getting first.  I begged them to pull the product but they gave me some BS quality control story.

Please if you are feeding Nutro take them off.

Nutro makes a variety of foods. Which Nutro product are you talking about?

Wow.

Its always good to share such information - and it certainly pays to research products thoroughly....

However...

We feed Nutro to some of our dogs.  We use it with dogs who are sensative or have allergies, and one who has a very slight pancreatic deficiency. She was diagnosed NOT pancreatitis - but a slight deficiency.

The dogs we choose to feed Nutro thrive on it and it has resolved several problems for us over the years.

I would add that we feed it only to adults. We do not feed any NUTRO puppy products.

Nutro is good and then it is recalled.  They fix the problem and then it strikes again.  I know it can happen with any food but I would not feed any Nutro food to any of my dogs. I would not feed it to my worst enemy.

I am very sorry to hear about your pups dying, that should just not be happening after all the
recalls and information on what's in the food.

I fed Nutro to my dogs years ago, and they started itching and their fur
started falling out.

I have used so many brands of dogfood over the years, that I am pleased to say
I have found the right dog food for all my dogs, I think it's going on a year now since
I have started feeding Canidae All Life Stages, I no longer have any ear problems or
problems with dull coats.

Also my pups devour it!

I do on occassion feed raw also.

So far, I'm sticking with this dog food, it cost me $ 31.00 for a 40 pound bag, and when
you have 9 alligators to feed, it's so worth it
!

I hear you sparrow!

I was driving over the bridge to the next town to some fancy health food store for dogs,
and I was paying about $ 39.00 for a 40 pound bag, and I was buying alot, and asked the guy
if he could give me a break on the price, and he wouldn't, THEN, I called around and in the
same town I live in is a boarding kennel that sells it, and I asked her if I could get a break on the
price and low & behold, she said sure, so if I keep going to her kennel to buy it, she will sell it to
me for $ 31.00 for a 40 pound bag.

Doesn't hurt to ask around.

Ramson Kennel is located in Salisbury Ma.

Now what?

Have the Chinese suppliers found a way to slip in more contaminated ingredients using sham compainies in the USA?

There has to be a quality control problem.

for anyone feeding canidae or some other pricier brands that you don't normally find in pet stores, call around to feed stores. they often carry these types of dog foods and also they may carry one or more raw diets. the prices are almost always better than a vet or fancier store.

I have told this before so Ill say it again

Nutro products have    menadione   Vit. K activity in them    even the Holistic food has it....it is poison..

It is a chemical vitamin and was not fit for human consumption....FDA would not approve it for people so dog food companies use it and feed companied use it...

'Our schutzhund club in Houston dropped Nutro and sAMS  EXCEED  because of the study on this crap in the dog foods...'

READ LABels>>>>>MENADIONE DOES TO THE LIVER JUST WHAT     SWEET AND LOW AND ASPERTAME DOES TO THE LIVER AND THE KIDNEYS AND THE GALL BLADDER.....LIVER IS YOUR FILTER SYSTEM    WHEN IT GET LOADED WITH TOXINS AND CANT SHED THEM ...LIVER FAILS AND WHOLE BODY EVIDENTUALLY GOES WHACKEY..

I HAVE ABIDED BY THIS RULE SINCE I FIRST GOT MY SHEPHERDS, UPON THE ADVISE OF A NUMBER ONE  BREEDER HERE IN THE USA AND SHE IS GERMAN.

I use to feed Natural Choice large breed lamb and rice. I had fed it for a long time. My dogs did ok on it for a while but then around Feb of this year they started getting very dry skin and loose stool. Also about this time Nutro pulled the large breed lamb off of the shelf saying that they were doing a product change. At this time I switched my dogs to Diamond Naturals lamb and rice. They are doing great on it. There energy level is good and their coats are great. One other good thing is that Diamond Naturals DOESNT have that MENADIONE crap in it.

WOW $123?! I pay I think $55 for a bag of Orijen, $34 for Canidae.  Lucky me, I work for a kennel that feeds Canidae, so they order extra and I buy from them cheaper, since they get a bulk price. Our puppy looks great on teh Orijen/WolfCub blend we feed her, and I think our others look equally good on Canidae.

Interesting comment comparing aspartame to menadione...I have a client who reminds me regularly who awful for me the diet soda is I carry around.  Then again, how many of us eat hamburger helper so our dogs can eat the best holistic foods?

Unfortunately, again YR does not know what she is talking about concerning the vitamin K. It is synthetic, meaning man-made, but it is the same chemical as naturally occurring vitamin K. And no, vitamin K in this form is not poisonous and neither is aspartame. However, a small number of people who have phenylketonuria will have problems with aspartame for reasons I won't bother to write here.

Feed what you like, but do not speak about something being a poison unless you can back it up with science. If you do not know the difference or not between something synthetic vs supposedly natural, that might be a good place to start. Ignorance is bliss.

steve1 - that is an incredible amount to pay for any food. I do feed Orijen but wouldn't at that price. I know your in Belgium but try this link and see if he can't do better than that. The guy I have dealt with is named Matt. They have free shipping on orders over $50 and the Orijen adult is or was $57.99 (or close to that) for the 29.7 lb. bag. I don't know if he ships international but I am sure there would have to be a charge for it. www.doggiezbest.com

I've been faithfully feeding my two labs Nutro dry foods for 13 years.  A few months ago they began to vomit and have diarrhea.  I took them off Nutro and have been making food for them and the vomiting and diarrhea stopped.  Unfortunately they are both currently exhibiting signs of degenerative myelopathy (I won't pay the $1500 to get a definitive diagnosis).  I find it hard to believe that they would both develop symptoms shortly after getting ill while eating Nutro foods.

There is a company call zooplus who ship Orijen and other types of premium food. If you order over a certain amount for some countries the shipping is free I believe.

I feed my dogs Nutro Natural Choice for Large Breeds. I am concerned about all the people having a problem with this brand. I purchased three 40 pound bags and am on the last bag. I have been feeding this same brand for the last three years for my female and my year old has been on it since he was eight weeks old...I was told by the breeder to feed him adult not puppy food. Their  stools are firm and they don't  vomit but they both don't seem to like  the food.

Has anyone had a problem with the Adult Large Breed dog food in the royal blue bag???

This is interesting.  My girl has always had a hearty appettiate and for the last few weeks has not eaten all her food which is the Nutro Natural Balance Senior w/ G&C.  I have taked about it some as she has always been such a chow hound but we are so hot and humid lately thought the heat was effecting her eating.  I have not been overly concerned as she is still full of energy and acts normal and not the least tired acting or nor losing weight.

I appreciate this post and input from everyone.

Thanks for the warning! This is inexcusable, that dog owners cannot trust the food they feed. I think that this trend started about ten years ago. This is when I started to see serious compromise in the quality of dog foods I had come to trust. I was seeing a sharp reduction in condition of my dogs, mainly from lack of fats in the kibble. I compensated somewhat by adding corn oil, which is excellent for skin, coat, eyes.

More recently, additives are coming from China in the guise of "protein supplements", and these supplements boost the protein assay of the food they are added to. They test high in protein when burned and the gases are analyzed. In fact, the test looks for nitrogen, and where the results can indicate high nitrogen content, it is misleading for us.. instead of nitrogen from protein, it is actually nitrogen from the waste of coal and plastics industry (melamine), some of it from computer recycling.

I am not making this up! I did a lot of personal research into the problem a couple of years ago, when so many dogs were dying of kidney failure from tainted pet food. I discovered that there is a huge demand in China for melamine, and that much of this is being filled by recycled plastics from the computer waste shipped from consumer countries like the USA. Usually, it is harmless filler, but our dogs are not receiving the nutrition they need, and occasionally, the normally-insoluble melamine does get into the bloodstream, where it is filtered by the kidneys. If it crystalizes in the kidneys, scarring results and loss of kidney function. When the kidneys are damaged in this manner, they cannot be restored. The damage may not be evident for years.  When the kidneys have lost approximately 2/3 of their integrity, only then will blood tests indicate the tell-tale elevated creatinine and blood urea nitrates which indicate impending kidney failure.

However, there is hope. I believe that we must stop buying these foods. The problem is with both canned and dry foods. I started to recycle a lot of my household surplus and leftover foods by cooking it down in a large crock pot, and the results have been extremely promising! I put in all the food groups, in all combinations, and the dogs love it all. I just have to make sure that there is some meat in each meal, because they do like and need that. I put in lettuce, too old to make salad with (Romaine is excellent), carrots, garlic, some beans (not too much), corn, peas, green beans, pasta, rice, old bread, corn tortillas, tomatoes, potatoes, some onions (not too much(, and so on. I have not yet found anything they don't like, in any combination, and they are REALLY eager for dinner time, now! I never waste chicken anymore! All of the skin, giblets, and even the bones.. all go in the pot. Even if the meat is a little bit old, it is OK. Just add a cup of vinegar, and it does a lot to sanitize the food, and it will actually make the bones soft enough to break up in your hands. I do check to make sure the bones have reached this point before I feed them... only chicken bones.. no beef or pork.

If you don't have quite enough to go around, you can thin it out to a soupier consistency and put it over bread or rice. Never feed sour rice or let the food stand. It must be kept either too hot, or too cold for bacterial growth. It is a problem getting it to cool enough to feed or refrigerate when it is convenient for you... Until then, you can just keep the crock pot on low. When you are ready to prepare it for use or storage, you can take a large steamer pan or lasagna pan and pour the contents into that. The increased surface area will help it cool off fairly quickly.

People.. We have only had commercial dog food in recent times.. the last fifty years. Before that, dogs ate from our table and were healthy. They are basically omnivorous, now. They do need meat, but they can use vegetables, roots and grain products, too.

I would like to mention, also, that I heard that a Canadian company was bringing in these Chinese protein supplements and  that they are formulating much of the food going into the US. These sorts of problems are affecting ALL BRANDS, now! I saw someone mention Diamond food. I remember when that was an AWESOME food! No more!

Feeding commercial dog food is a huge waste and dangerous to our dogs. Further, most households could feed two GSDs quite well without it. The key is the crockpot and wise use of surplus, overbought, and leftover food! If you don't have quite enough, ask your neighbors to give you their food waste, and tell them they are helping the environment!

Back on August 30 2008 we had purchased a new bag of Nutro Lamb and rice, which we have been feeding our American Pitbull Terrier for 8 yrs.   The night of Sept 1, 2008 is when it all starting happening.  Stomach all upset that you can hear it, throwing up, diarea the whole nine yards!!  The next day the dog would not move.  Took him to the vet and said he had a fever of 105.8, they would not touch him had to take him to the Vet hospital.  That is when it all begain, $6500 later and now it is Sept. 28 and we still don't have any answers.  I can write the whole thing step by step but I really just don't have the time.  Put it this way I had a 55 lb. dog and now he is down to 47 lb dog.  The animal hospital we took him to did every test under the sun but  nevere a fecal.  We are now kicking outselves in the butt!!  I have contacted Nutro and hey wanted a sample of the food and said that there is nothing wrong with their product.  I have been online searching and keep coming up with sites on peoples dogs being sick from Nutro.  I agree, if you are feeding your dog Nutro take them off now!!

I have two Shih Tzu and I have feed them Nutro since they came home with me at 12 weeks old. They have never really liked the food and I always tried to trick them into eating it by putting little treats in there food. One of my shih tzu has always thrown up a yellow foamy liquid. I took her took her to the vet and he said she probably going too long between meals, so we began feeding her later in the day and the problem continues. I have researched everywhere online and found this same problem dogs throwing up yellow foam when eating Nutro. I am going to Petsmart tomorrow and getting a new brand of dog food... obviously this brand's standards are not up to mine.

I am so sorry about your dogs.  Personally we feed Flint River Ranch b/c of food allergies in one of my dogs.  All human food grade and no chemicals.  You have to order it and have it shipped and it is a little more expensive than the crap brands that have ingredients that are not eligible for human comsumption, but I feel it the best dog food available.

ShihTuMom that seems to be the common problem with all who fed it. Mine included. I went and talked to a Nutro rep at the local Petsmart .......not telling her what I know about the food....and just asking her about it to see what she said. She basically said it was the best food out there from all she said. I asked her you know, have any dogs gotten sick from it or anything, and she tried to tell me only the can food was ever put on recall, and the bags were always fine...which is a load of crap. She also backed the food up saying nothing would happen to my dogs if they were on it, and I can't remember what all she said, but Nutro would do something....if for some reason they did get sick......should have gotten that in writing as I know it's a lie.  Nutros lied to many, and caused many deaths, sicknesses, and they deny it all.

This doesn't have to do with GSD's but  the Nutro food.  I feed my GSD Fromm dry and Solid Gold can.  My cats I have just put them o Nutro max indoor.  Then after reading the post checked the ingredients and the 2nd to the last ingredient was Menadione Sodium Bisulfite ( Source of Vitamin K activity).  I love my cats and want them to remain healthy.  This is their first bag of Nutro.  They don't  seem to really like it anyway, so I will put them back on their old food, but should I worry at all?
Thanks.

I tried Nutro Max  briefly but stopped using it very quickly due to dogs' chronic gas and diarrhea. I usually use a blend of different foods for individual dogs. I will often use a base of Nuro Natural Choice (differnt types available - large breed, sensitive skin or stomach, high energy, etc), cooked human grade chicken or lamb, rice if needed, among other things. I try to keep each dog on the food that seems to agree with him, his health and level of activity, and only make changes in response to health situations. It is often a trial and error situation.

I tried more expensive organic foods but they often smelled very fishy to me, and the dogs often would not touch it - and they normally are not fussy eaters.

These days you can never tell. I monitor my dogs all the time for any kind of changes in health, digestive or otherwise, and make changes judiciously.

this is really scary i have always fed my 2 chihuhuas on nutro natural small bites since puppies, due to my dog trainer recommending it but reading this has cleared something up for me and now scared me.
the older dog used to vomit this yellow bile every morning for about 8 months but not all the time just odd days,
i thought he was eating things(bugs) in the garden and this was causing it vet couldnt explain either, he was lethargic for about an hour then ok
. now i feel so lucky he didnt die but hope he has no internal damage, but what you may find interesting is i live in the uk and did not use the uk version, as i am a flight attendant who flies international i always bought my nutro in the usa or hong kong as it was cheaper due to the favourable exchange rate, this may explain why there was no constant illness as i used bags from various countries.
to be honest he hasnt been ill for a while but  i am now wondering whether to completly stop using it even though younger dog never had symtoms.
anymore feedback gladly taken

He sounded pretty convincing and he said there food was better and said for my Great Dane it was the best.  I decided to pass until I did the research and I'm glad I did!!!! I have invested too much money in this dog to have it die for feeding it a different food, so I’m going to stick with EUKANUBA.

I tried Nutro's Natural Choice in '96. Never saw so much stinky, runny shit in my life. My Dad was visiting. helping me around the yard. One day he came in and told me he'd burned every last bit of that stuff and would go on poop-scoop strike if I bought anymore.
That was that.

Daddy had a way of getting my attention.

I have tried switching to find a food the rescue and my dogs like also, they are liking the Nutro Natural Lamb and Rice, but suddenly they are vomiting yellow and won't eat like they used to, I take them off try Natural Balance Ultra Premium, but it is too rich and they get gas. Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Salmon is better, and they like it...no gas, My dogs have now stopped eating the Nutro Natural after going through 3 bags of it, I listen to my dogs and will not feed it again...they do have looser stools on it also... I go through about 1 35 pound bag every 3 days, for the rescues and it cost $40-$42/bag... Steph
