Anyone have any information on an eye condition called iip or ipp?
thanks

I do not have much knowledge of GSD eye conditions thought to be heritable other than Pannus. I am not familiar with the terms iip or ipp. Is at least one (1) of the letters "p" an abbreviation for Pannus?

In the UK GSDs are on Schedule A of the Eye examination test for HC (Hereditary Cataracts). However if you consult the breed supplements you can count on the fingers of one hand GSDs that have been screened for this!
Schedule A lists the known inherited eye diseases in the breeds where it is considered that there is enough scientific information to show that the condition is inherited in that breed and often what the mode of inheritance is. For the breeds in Schedule A a certificate is issued with results of "affected" or "unaffected" and these results are recorded and published by the Kennel Club.

hello Langhaar, Could you please post a link or page of the Schedule A inherited disease? That would be very interesting. Is Degenerative Mylopathy on the list?
Thank you, cindy |

IMO if GSD breeders using imported stock did more eye checks they may be surprised to find out how many eye diseases there are in the breed. The SV doesn't seem concerned and I rarely see a CERF number listed for any breeding stock other than American lines. CERF has a website where you can read all about eye diseases in dog and search their database for GSD's that have been cleared by a CERF examiner. Just remember these certs are only good for one year and then the dog needs to be done again. |

thank you. I also took advantage of the free eye screening for working dogs. The gal next to me had her dog diagnosed with ppm. I had never heard of it.
love to learn new things. |

Over the years a few of my Malamutes had PPM's, iris to iris, on their CERF exams. They were still eligible for a CERF number with the "breeder's option" caveat. If I would have bred any of them, I'd have made sure the mate did not have PPM's. Even if it's not yet proven to be genetic in that breed, I think it's prudent to try to not double up on the condition. If I remember right, they disappeared on one male when he had an updated exam. BTW your vet should be able to see PPM's, it doesn't take a CERF examiner with special equipment. |
