|
|
Hi everyone i need your help! My bitch's kennel is made out of wood. I caught her chewing on the wood last night! My bitch is the stubborn sort and holds her own! So anyway i caught her chewing on the wood and i slapped her and gave her a good shouting! I think she consumed lillte teeny weeny pieces of it! Today she was coughing she passed her stool twice! Any suggestions? I will be taking her to vet tomorrow. |

I have a large tree in my backyard that is constantly shedding branches. The dogs think they are great chew toys, and are always chewing them and no doubt swallowing little bits, without harm. The only reason I'd worry about her chewing on the kennel would be because wood is often pressure-treated with toxic chemicals to keep it from rotting. I doubt very much your dog will be hurt by this, but if she's coughing, she MIGHT have a splinter caught in her throat, so a trip to the vet to check her out isn't a bad idea.
You might try painting the wood with something unpalatable, like bitter apple. If that doesn't work you may have to get a metal kennel. (She'll probably eat plastic as well!) |

gsdfanatic1964 i hope you dont think im a mean owner! I love her to death its just that she's very stubborn and i got very frustrated! Sunsilver i think your right! I dont think the paint is available in my country! But can i put a a bitter chemical that is put on the finger nails of young children to prevent them for bitting them? But i do have a metal crate! |

I just realized my post was confusing, especially for someone who is from a non-English speaking country. Sorry! Will try to explain better!
Does the wood have a greenish colour to it? That means it has been treated with toxic chemicals to keep it from rotting. Do NOT let her chew on it!
If it is just plain wood that has not been painted, I don't think it will hurt her unless she got a sliver stuck in her throat.
Yes, you can treat the wood with something that tastes bad. Here in North America, there is a spray called Bitter Apple that is used to prevent chewing. See if you can find it, or something similar. |

No the wood is just has a natural colour to it. Its not greenish in colour. Sprays like bitter apple are available over here! Thankyou so much for helping me out sunsilver. She's going to the vet 2morro and ill him check her throat. Anyway when she started coughing i gave her some water. She has not coughed since then. |

dont need a vet you need a different kind of dog house. wood wont hurt them unless she slivers it...my welping boxes have little chew places all along the door way and on the opening where the wire goes for the open wire window....never hurt anyone yet.....take her dog house away.....she may decide if she wants a dog house to quit chewing it...ha ha ha
how old is this girl....give her a cow hoof or a round bone to chew if in a kennel tie the round bone with a cotton rope to the side of kennel...if she finds out how to unchew the rope ,,fine and dandy,,,will give her something to do.
and wont hurt her.
She is either bored or she is cutting teeth or likes to chew.....give her cow hooves...no toys or balls,,,,big hard treats if you have some and round bones. |

I agree with gsdfanatic why did you slap her? The only thing the dog gets from this is that there is pain associated with your touch. If you want to correct the dog in a way in which the dog will understand you need to grab her by the scruff of the neck shake her and tell her no or phoey so that she associates it with poor behavior. This is how a mother dog corrects a pup so it is a known pack behavior and after a time or two they know not to do it again.

My dog constantly eats wood. In fact he has eaten half a weatherboard off my house!!! I think he does it because he is highly strung, he is constantly needing to do something. I have now given him a motor bike tyre that he flings around and can't destroy. Perhaps your bitch needs something like this to keep her occupied? |

This dog does not need a slap or a scruff shake and shame on those of you who suggested punishment for the behavior a dog displayed probally out of boredom.
Instead of punishing the dog, who will only learn to fear the owner, continue the behavior when the owner is not around and continue to chew if bored, have you never heard of preventive measures??
Use a metal pen and before losing your temper with the dog, ask yourself why is the dog doing this?
What a shame that the first thought to come to mind is let's hit the dog, instead figuring out the why.

She is still a young pup , that is why...correct where you keep her and her activities...she needs more time with you and more activities.
She need a metal pen, metal dishes, stainless steel water container on a ss cow clip attached to pen sides. and some chew aids to last her...she needs time out of her area . several times a day...every day of the week...she needs your touch like brushing her,,,,massaging her, and doing ball work and start tracking her.
Someone said on a thread a few days ago.....many people get a german shepherd and do not know that they need more time spent on them than most dogs, and the reason most people give them up , is because they dont have the proper time to raise them properly...one of the top Ten reasons for not owning a German Shepherd is that they chew up their surroundings when left alone and unattended.
Boredom and need of attention...If you dont have the time to play, talk , train, have fun and spend time with a pup of this magnitude...then dont punish the pup....find him or her a home with someone who will give the pup companionship....they do not like being left in a kennel for long periods of time.
Get a pet sitter., is the other alternative.

Yellowrose of texas i think your right! Oh and i spend a lot of time with her. I only lock her up in her kennel at night and when im not around. Otherwise she is inside the house. I talk her for walks, swimming and i teach her bitework, so i guess she is happy. K9trainer04 she is my first gsd and im trying my best to raise her! Mistakes do happen and im not perfect! I dont understand why people have to be nasty to someone who just wants other people's opinions. I've ordered a new kennel which is made of metal. |

I did not mean to come across as nasty, but I call it as I see it. My concern was not just the slap you gave but that you considered another member's advice to give the dog a scruff shake instead of a slap next time. What I'm trying to help you understand is this behavior warrants NO punishment. And to think in a different way as to the reason the dog is doing this behavior or any behavior before applying physical punishment. I got my first GSD 4 years ago and I have never used physical corrections on him and he is very well behaved. He responds to verbal corrections and withdrawing things he likes until he gives me the behavior I want. He is a big dog, 115 lbs., I don't want him mad at me!! So he was brought up learning that he could trust me not to hurt him, but calmly without physical pain let him know when he is wrong and always looking within myself to see if I'm at fault for the behavior rather than blaming him. Good luck, it sounds like you do give her plenty of exercise but she still could be missing being with you in the house at night. Timber sleeps on his doggie bed on the floor next to my side of the bed. Would it be possible for you to keep her with you at night, and you could try a kong filled with treats when you have to kennel her while you're out. |
